Hecate Enthroned
Redimus

Candlelight Records
2004

Reviewed by Peter Johnston

Hecate Enthroned hail from England and play symphonic black metal… and if the world were a kinder place for this band, there would be no such thing as Cradle of Filth. If Dani and crew were to vanish from the scene, our thoughts, and the constant abuse in my stereo, Hecate Enthroned would be ****ing rock stars simply because there would be a hole in the black metal scene and there would be no one else who could do a better job filling it.

You see, for about as long as Cradle of Filth has basked in praise and glory for their work, these guys have huddled in the shadows, and clung to the thought that one day they’d share some of the warm, luxurious spotlight. Thus far the band has found relatively little appreciation in the metal scene, and the reason is simply because they’re not as good as Cradle, and they continue to insist on borrowing too many ideas from them.

On Hecate Enthroned’s sixth album, Redimus, the band gives us 12 tracks of atmospheric, orchestral black metal that in its own right is fairly solid. The guitars are often heavy, and the drummer knows what he’s doing, but the mix of less than crystal production, often whispered vocals and lazy keyboards forces a number of tracks right into the mud. Moreover, the group isn’t working very hard at creating an epic, grandiose “journey” in any of their songs, so that awesome, feeling you get from the “big” Cradle of Filth tracks simply doesn’t exist on Redimus.

If you or I could take at face value what Hecate Enthroned has done on this disc, we’d probably be able to get into it more. Tracks including “An Eternal Belief” or the title track really have some quality ideas, and it’s a shame to ignore them… but the Cradle of Filth comparison is impossible to dispel, at least from my mind, and it poisons most of my opinion of this material.

Finally, I think it would be far, far better for Hecate Enthroned to wait on releasing on of their albums until the smoke from the most recent Cradle of Filth release has cleared. Throwing Redimus on the scene right after Nymphetamine does no favors for these guys, as it seems quite clear which new album will be getting (deservedly) all the attention.

These reviewers obviously are U.S. or they wouldn't keep Using the C.O.F. word in the same way as Hecate Enthroned now would they?

As far as i'm concerned when a reviewer reviews an album as inaccuratly as an idiot like this it just makes him seem stupid. So the jokes on him really.

Dean.

Spose your right there. Just wish these twats would verify their facts before they put this up for viewing. It's **** like this that turns away potential listeners. Thats what makes me mad. Inaccurate reviewing.

It goes to prove that they will never get over the cof thing, how we can still be likened to them is unbeleivable.

I couldnt give a toss!!! Considering the fact that none of us even listen to COF, i find it hard to believe how we can be likened to them still. Reviews like this do wind me up occasionally because song-writing/imagery/lyrics,blah blah blah, we are so far away from COF, it mystifies me!!!! emoticon
Anyway, as for our less than "crystal clear production" - we record on a shoestring budget with minimum studio time and very little mixing time!! A lot more black metal than wearing nailvarnish n eyeliner i think!!!!!!!!!
