Pondering while waiting for my plans....


Hello everyone, while waiting for my plans to arrive, and thinking about, someday, starting a build, I had some thoughts. Not knowing much about trike dynamics, I am under the impression the front end needs to be properly weight biased. (What this is I don't know!) Anyway, browsing
at the pics, it came to me that if the front shocks were horizonal verses vertical, the driver and center of mass could move forward a good amount. Maybe I'm trying to re-engineer a properly engineered vehical, I dunno.

Are there any skid pad numbers available on the original?

Also, what size die do I need (to buy) for my bender?

Certainly mounting the shocks horizontally should be possible...that's actually, I think, the more common configuration. Here's a link to an interesting trike build that you might want to look at how he did the front suspension. http://www.mride.se/ While there are some things that aren't my cup of tea with this build, the craftsmanship is amazing, he's got a clever idea for reverse, and I LOVE the turbo! emoticon

You don't necessarily need to bend the tubing. If you check Richard's build photo, you'll see that he chose to mitre the joints which allowed him to skip the bending and end up with a nice frame.

I chose to bend my tubing since I had a relative that had a tubing bender, the die was a 3" one if I remember that right.

My shocks are vertical but looking back at pictures of my build I would have had to rearrange some things, I think my master cylinder would have gotten in the way.

I had it out on my sisters paved turnaround and with a 600cc engine you can break the tire loose in a turn so personally I am glad I don't have my weight biased any further forward. I've only had it out on the backroads for a couple of miles testing it so I may feel differently after I have my project completed and can flog it a bit.

Skid pad number would be of interest to lot of us but I haven't seen any.

Acerguy, Nice Post with the M-ride site!

I like the layout of that suspension, especially the rocker-arm and shock location. The actual arms look like they would suffer from the same thing that mine have to deal with to some degree, and that is the distance between the heim joints on an arm increasing/decreasing as the camber/caster is adjusted. I like how several IndyCycle builders have used the aircraft grade aerodynamic tubing for their design with great success. I may try swapping the swingarms upright on my rebuild and relocating the steering to see if that improves handling (that, and adding the steering ratio gearing box from Flaming River so that my lock-to-lock isn't 1.5. Toooo sensitive.

But again, nice post!
