 Reg: The DM
So other than the possibility the DM is a gnome or a sorceror does anyone care to suggest why he does what he does and why he decided to select the group just arrived in the realm?

I think he's mostly a sorceror, but a very short one!
They're not a part of the realm, but the realm called them there as they were most suited to help restore the place. And I'm guessing he knows how they can get out of the realm, but he is now allowed to tell them directly!

Makes sense, but what if that big bad evil they treated to an episdoe of almost Lovecraft order of sinister foe was responsible and the dm is actually keeping an eye out to see who's been sent and every now and then when he thinks they're suitable adopts them as a means of saving his family as well as the Realms since it does strike me as odd that he can't tell the way home.
It might be due to a geas or it could be by helping him they're stablising the realms enough so one day they can egt home, but for now he can't do anything since he's afraid if he told them the truth they might turn on him as Venger did.
As for Karina well I bet dm didn't expect Shiela might be the one to turn her back to the light!

I don't think he's got a big bad evil behind him, he just has to sort the realm and ocassionally, the Realm nabs a few people from our world and it's the DM's job to help them get back, but they have to earn their way back.
Now he is only a.. very.. short.. sorceror guy.... thingy and he can make some mistakes, as for what happened to Venger and Katrina to make them turn evil, we can only speculate!

I assumed sibling rivalry especially as Venger was turned to the "darkside" by a big bad guy whilst Karina went the same way most probably as a result of some event perhaps to do with dm's wife or perhaps he had a larger family which was depleted by virtue of Venger being turned and he turned Karina to help fight DM only to have her turn on him.
Still worth discussing though.
