I think what he means is that some songs make more sense when they're heard because the music portrays the emotion of the song in ways that sometimes lyrics can't... It adds depth to lyrics that otherwise may not be deep and if the music is bad, generally the lyrics seem to be bad as well.
Music is the other half of songwriting. So it makes sense that if the music is missing, part of the song seems to be missing as well.
