posticon 24@25

I am cutting a trailer for a film shot at 24fps, I am cutting from a 25fps miniDV tape with 25 timecode. The sound elements will arrive separately at 24fps.

So what should my project settings be? I would need a 24fps timeline to sync the sound and the final would be 'filmed out' for cinemas.

Now I reckon I'd need the 24@25 setting on Pal DV at 24fps.

Any light on this or the best workflow?

Thanks

Hey Moody!

Thanks for stopping by...

For those intending to join in theis conversation this is streight from the manual:

The following two patterns are available when your sequence has a frame rate of 24 fps
and you choose a 25 fps external video output.

- 24@25 Pulldown: In this pattern, frames 12 and 24 are pulled down for a duration of
three fields instead of two, creating a subtle stutter each half second. For 25 fps
output, this pattern has the best perceived motion quality.

-24@25 Repeat: This pattern simply repeats every 24th frame once to fit 24 fps footage
into 25 fps. This causes a noticeable stutter every second, but requires less processing
than the 24@25 pull-down pattern because no special interlacing is required.

Yes, you do need the 24@25 setting.

I am going to invite Footagehead and Nick from SydneyFCP into this discussion - I think they have a lot more experience in theis area than me emoticon

Stay tuned...

Hi, Nick here from Sydney.

Yep, it's really very simple, and you're on the right track, Moody

Doug's covered Monitoring, i'll cover other things

Capture at 25fps,
Conform to 24fps in the FCP Browser.

(Now you can sync to your audio)

Sequence Frame rate is 24fps,
and here's the one thing you probably haven't dealt with before,
you have to open the TC RATE column in the Browser and set a TC Rate of 24@25

this will allow FCP to calculate the TC correctly, and spit out an EDL.
(it can be done retrospectively if you've started already.)

which brings us the the Question:
How are you finishing this? is an EDL what you need at the end of the process?

another Big Q is which version of FCP are you using?
Prior to FCP6, this process did NOT work with Subclips
so if you wanted to work in smaller sections, you had to capture them that way.

this is supposed to be rectified in FCP6.
feel like testing it out? emoticon

of course testing the workflow and reading the Manuals are also highly recommended.

cheers,
nick

Thanks for being so on the ball guys. I really appreciate it. I did read the manual and yes I am running Final Cut 6 but being more used to Avid for these matters I am now on track. A well deserved pint there!
