Color for Idiots - to get the ball rolling.
I'm quite comfortable in FCS2 - but Color is unfamilair and more than a little bit scary at first glance. Has anyone got any quick tips and tricks to get stuck in and cooking on gas? (although I am well aware that colour correction is really an entire discipline on its own). After a few half-hearted tinkerings I have sent a sequence from FCP, tweaked its look a bit and then sent it back - I was surprised that it didn't update the timeline direct (like Motion) but rather stuck another version of the sequence in the file-browser. To get this topic rolling I would be very interested to see a post of a worked example of say film-look grade or something similar, eg. edited footage from FCP to Color - add this, mask that, tweak this curve, render, export, back to FCP - that type of thing. Anyone up for that? - or post a link to a good online tutorial?

Re: Color for Idiots - to get the ball rolling.
Hi Jujuman,
I recorded classes for a company based in Sydney and Chicago called FXPHD (www.fxphd.com) and among them was a one hour introduction to Color. I can't post that unfortunately because I don't hold the copyright but i might look at record one of my own for this forum.
In the meantime if you can handle shelling out around USD250 you can download the current semesters 10 episodes of Color tutorials from FXPHD.
For that price you also get 2 other classes - you can choose what you like but Red Camera and After Effects are among the highlights.
Cheers - and thanks for getting the ball rolling - very much appreciated

Interesting, I had no idea that such a thing as FXPHD existed. An ingenious concept for those with the cash. They look very well equipped. Cheers for the info, for the time being, as a FCP hobbyist - I will explore some of the zero cost routes and hunt around for some online tutorials.

Re: Color for Idiots - to get the ball rolling.
Hey there...
Yeah color is quite unfamiliar for me to... it feels like a mix between shake and combustion.... none of whom I really mastered... But when you start understand the linking process it gets a bit easier... Also a note... something I figured out the first time I used color for a job... it's made for ntsc... which may make the output look bad on a tv set. If you have a monitor be sure to check it... because it's hard to see digitally. I dont know if apple has already fixed the problem. (I just upgraded to 6.0.2) But just to be on the safe side

Re: Color for Idiots - to get the ball rolling.
Thanks for the cautionary note, I will hook up a monitor and compare when I use it in anger.
Also, I have been informed that this is an excelent introduction for any Color Virgins;
"Stop Staring and Start Grading with Apple Color" - By Walter Biscardi (of Creative Cow) - $50
