Army Wives
This is my new Sunday night addiction. It's a TV show on Lifetime. It's about 4 army wives and their husbands and the trials and tribulations of being a military family.
It's fairly realistic, although the stereotypes tend to be exaggerated.
Kim Delaney plays the Family Readiness Group (FRG) leader for the unit. (the FRG is a group for spouses and families within the unit). I was the FRG leader of Mr. D's unit in Germany. I don't know where the show's research department got their info from, but the elaborate functions they show are highly unrealistic.
Anyway, even if the army doesn't interest you, the storyline and characters are still pretty good.

Re: Army Wives
I have watched that too, and they do get it very close to real if you look through the 'hollywood'. I was a Key Wife for the Marine Corps- same position- the liason between the command and the wives/families, and assisted the Ombudsman- again same position with the Navy.
We never dressed as well, but then we weren't officers wives or on tv. and no the functions were neither as often or as pretty.
It is a good show and not all 'military- very character driven.

Re: Army Wives
They got enlisted housing down perfectly. Officer housing isn't as nice as they portray it.
The gossipy-backstabbing-cheating part seems pretty accurate as well.

I've been wondering how accurate this part was...
It's somewhat exaggerated, but it exists. Enlisted wives tend to be more gossipy, officer wives tend to be more backstabbing.
I don't know if I can watch anymore. It made me soooo jealous tonight. the redhead's husband flew home from deployment for 36 hours to see her. I know, it's just a TV show, and that was probably pretty unrealistic, but still.....

Re: Army Wives
The inaccuracies in the show are annoying the crap out of me, but I can't stop watching.
The biggest inaccuracy that annoys me the most is the Post Commander. They have him in charge of getting humvees shipped to Baghdad and all that sort of thing... In reality, a post Commander is just that--he's in charge of the post--not the military operations. He oversees housing and the commissary and the PX and the schools and the security and all the community related stuff. He would not be shipping out equipment and deploying soldiers, etc... And if you saw last night's episode--the FP CON threat levels were cracking me up. First, they got it backwards. Alpha is the highest level, not the lowest. And they don't kick dependents off the post until it's the highest level. The car inspections they were showing? That's common practice regardless of threat level.

Re: Army Wives
Yes, she'd be allowed to keep her job, but an XO puts in loooong hours.
The one hour notice has happened before, but it's rare. It's usually three hours (which is really almost as bad).
When the war first started, my husband's unit was supposed to deploy to Turkey to set up communications into Iraq. They got all their stuff packed and their equipment shipped. They knew approximately what week they'd leave, but that was it. They would get a call and someone would give them a code word. Depending on the codeword, they either had 1 hour, 3 hours or 5 hours to report for deployment.
Turkey refused to let the US enter Iraq through them, so the mission was canceled.
This time when he went it was a permanent change of station--not a deployment. We knew for months exactly when he'd leave. Once he got to Kuwait, he was deployed into Iraq on 4 hours notice. Now they're waiting to be deployed to Afghanistan. They'll only have a few hours to report to move for that also.
The major grabbing his bag out of the closet and walking out the door on a few minutes notice was pretty accurate. When you know a deployment is coming, you have your bag packed and ready.

Re: Army Wives
I haven't watched this season except the first two episodes.
As for the uniforms, those are real. The name tags ARE velcro, as are all the patches. That's the new uniform.

Re: Army Wives
It's so much easier now--no sewing, removing, sewing some more every time you change units. Plus, the new uniforms are wrinkle free. No more starch and ironing, hallelujah!
I hated Claudia Joy's daughter, so I was kind of glad they blew her up. But, the first few episodes were more than I could stomach and I never watched it after that.
Plus Joan annoys me too. The whole thinking about aborting the baby for her career is ridiculous. The Army hasn't been like that for a couple of decades.
Also, I used to really like Roxy, and the story line with her husband and how he acted after he got back was pretty accurate, but she started to annoy me too, for no particular reason.

Re: Army Wives
Well, the kid looked EXACTLY like Claudia Joy...and she was headed off for college, so to blow her up was just silly. I guess they had to kill someone we remotely cared about, though.
Joan's storyline has been awkward, too. First, she wants to abort, then she nearly miscarries over and over...then she starts to hemmorage during childbirth...interesting, though, that no returning soldier can donate blood unless there's an emergency....wonder what that's all about.
They must have realized Pamela's stalker was stupid, too, since she kneed him in the balls and then punched him in the nose....and all was done.
This season is lame to say the least. Luckily for them, I still DVR them....and there's nothing else on TV right now...or else I wouldn't be watching this show right now.
