Big Love

I've only seen the first two episodes, but I can officially say I love this show.

It seems like if you're not LDS or from Utah, you'd miss a ton of the humor, though.

My one complaint is that there's too much sex. (Yes, I realize how strange that sentence probably seems coming from me). You know that I've no objection to sex--I'm certainly no prude--but it really just seems gratuitous in this show. Some of it was necessary for the plotline, but I'm hoping that as I watch more episodes, they stop showing every single time the guy has sex with one of his wives. The plot and characters are good enough that it doesn't need to rely on so much sex to carry the show.

Oh, and the girl who works at the fast food place with the oldest daughter--the one who was in Napoleon Dynamite as Deb--her character is dead on. I went to high school with many clones of her.

Oh, sorry--It's on HBO. I don't know what time, and I don't know when season two starts (or maybe season three by now?). I'm watching the dvds, two episodes at a time, from Netflix because I'm too cheap (and poor) to pay for HBO.

*O.K., I just looked it up. It's on HBO, Sundays at 9 (Eastern). It looks like season 2 is about to end.

Also, it's about a polygamist family in Salt Lake City (no, not exactly Mormon, but close--real Mormons don't practice polygamy).

The HBO website says the new episodes air on Sundays at 9.

They must have moved it after John from Cincinnati ended because that was its time slot

Re: Big Love

For the last 2 episodes of the season, they moved it to Mondays.

I love this show. I know what you mean about not getting it if you are not Mormon. There are a ton of things I wouldn't get but for Indy talking to me. (BTW, I get the veil thing in the opening...any significance to the ice...other than skating on thin ice?)

I don't remember that much sex in season one. Get ready...season two is GRAPHIC.

The show is written by an Ex-Mo, so he has a lot of insights into the LDS religion.

Re: Big Love

I found the ice thing odd. If there is a connection there, I haven't made it.

Maybe there will be less sex as the season goes on (Like I said, I've only seen the first two episodes). So far though, they've had a lot of sex (epi 2 was when he started using viagra). The sex itself doesn't bother me--I'd just rather have seen more storyline. I get it. He has three wives. He gets a lot of sex. Now, develop the characters a little more please.

And I have to say, seeing Bill Paxton's butt that often was never on my list of things to do before I died. emoticon

Re: Big Love

No worries, they DO develop the characters.

Margene is probably everyone's favorite. I know she's mine. I HATE Nikki.

I remember this season thinking "I know they did not have this much sex in season one!"...and let's just say there's many more WILD romps in season 2.

Indy won't watch the show. He thinks it degrades his religion. He's probably unaware that it's probably bringing many people into investigating it...

Re: Big Love

There are a lot of LDS who won't watch it. First, we probably shouldn't be watching it simply because of the sexual content.

That aside, though, it doesn't degrade our religion. They've made it clear they're not LDS. They point out that Barb used to be LDS and misses it and disapproves of the group the husband and Nikki come from.

I think it does create an interest in the religion.

I love Margene. I hate Nikki. I took the "which wife are you?" quiz on the website. I'm a Barb, which I figured I would be. I think Margene is the most real so far. Nikki is just plain evil (at least after 2 episodes).

I'm Barb, too...which really surprised me!

Mr. SDL didn't think he'd like the show. He had a day off a couple weeks ago, and he binged on Big Love on DirecTV...getting caught up from last season and now this one. It's one of his favorites now....so, it's less about religion, etc than it is about the human condition of these people.

Re: Big Love

Episodes 3 and 4 had NO sex at all (unless you count a wet dream). I'm off to watch #5 now...

Oh, and I have to know--do Margene and Ben (the oldest son) have something going on? I can't wait--I need to know!

That question lingers in Season 2 as well...

Re: Big Love

I don't know if you remember the episode, but it was the one where he's basically having an affair with Barb (it's episode 5). At the beginning they're at a function of some sort, and later Barb says some other woman was looking for her garment line (to know if she was LDS). That has to be the most realistic phrase uttered in the show so far. People do that all the time--I even find myself doing it unconsciously. You can't always tell on men, but if you know what garments look like, they're easy to spot on a woman. I find myself doing it in airports for some reason.

I didn't want to spoil the show for you, but that's the one I wanted to ask about. Seemed like it would be something people would do...

I started looking at the woman who used to work for us to see if I could make out her garment, too. I think she wore hers over her bra, though. She was wearing a white t-shirt the last time I saw her and I was trying to see if I could see the symbols...but I couldn't.

I'm sure I looked like a lesbo staring at her boobs. LOL.

Re: Big Love

I'm finally getting the Season 2 discs from Netflix!! Yay!!! I've watched the first 3 episodes so far.

I'm kind of liking Nikki and her father doesn't seem so bad. So, I know something's up and one (or both) of them is going to do something really evil soon. There's no way they're going to let them stay likable.

And I'm starting to dislike Bill. That can't be good.

This week we've (LB & I) have seen 2 shows w/ Big Love characters, One had Bill's bro as a lawyer , and then an episode of Bones and ALBIE was the lawyer. I do not like Albie.

I know! I kept looking at Kate's lawyer thinking, "O.K., he must have been on before. Who was he?" I was convinced he was a previous Lost character and they were messing with us. Then I remembered that he plays Bill's brother.

I hate Albie, too. And Rhonda. They're both evil.

I thought Albie's father was bad, but Albie, he has sold his soul to the devil kind of bad.
