It is the Aussie film close to Eric Bana's heart and an early buzz is building about his performance in Romulus, My Father.
Bana, who starred in the locally made film (with Richard Roxburgh as first-time director), will be showing off a different aspect of his acting when the film is released in May.
"He's given a terrific performance in the film - I think people will see a whole other dimension of [Eric], which is always very exciting," said producer Robert Connolly, who is currently sharing an office with Bana in Melbourne. Connolly said the film was a sensitive, beautiful story about a bond between father and son.
"One of the distinguishing things about it is the quality of the performances," he said.
"It's very moving. People find it quite overwhelming."
The movie went into development after Richard Roxburgh fell in love with the book Romulus, My Father written by Raimond Gaita. Roxburgh approached Connolly - who is best-known as a director - about the potential for turning it into a film.
The result was Roxburgh as director, Connolly as producer and Bana in the leading role - a potent trio within the film industry. The book was adapted for screen by poet and playwright Nick Drake.
Roxburgh was well received as a first-time director, with Bana and other cast members working easily with him.
"It's quite a mature work for a first-time director, it's pretty astonishing," Connolly said. "Even though it's his first film, he's acted in a huge number of films over the years, so he brings all that experience to it."
Romulus, My Father may show at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival before its Australian release on May 31. The producers will find out in about six weeks whether the film will be screened there.
"It's a very exciting time, we've worked on this project for many years," Connolly said. The film may be considered for entry in the Toronto Film Festival, he said, which is a gateway to the North American market.
Early screenings of the film were held in Sydney and Melbourne last week.
