Re: Troy
I don't know about you guys, but I alsways felt that the character of Andromache was very flat and uninteresting in the movie. She seems to have function at all, other then explaning the exsistence of Hector's son.
But in reality, she was one of the most dramatic figures from the Iliad and other sources!
Next to her husband, Achilles had already killed her 7 brothers. When she hears that Achilles killed Hector, she thinks only of their son Astyanax. But, when Troy fell, the little boy was thrown from the walls (like Hector says in the movie when he showns her the tunnel).
She is taken to Greece as a warprice by Achilles'son. He is married to Menelaus' daughter, Hermione. Menelaus and Hermione even try to kill her.
So, not so boring after all. The movie just made her less interesting. Like in a lot of movies, the women in Troy served to make things look more interesting. They could have made more of an effort....
But hey, as long as Eric is in the shot.... who even notices?

Re: Troy
I agree Isis, she was sooo dull but yet, in the legend, anything but. I also don't care for that actress as other stuff I have seen her in makes me think she only has one expression....just my own opinion. Sometimes I watch Troy and it can do no wrong, other times I watch Troy and I wish it could have been less campy but more serious. Do you know what I mean?

Re: Troy
Don't really know that actress all that well, but I got the feeling that she was reigned in A LOT in her performance. Just had that gut feeling she was chomping at the bit to be more relevent & to have her voice heard?
I felt the writers, producers & the director do not have a high opinion of women!
I mean seriously, does ANYONE belive that women only developed a brain & a backbone in the last 50 yrs???
Puuuuuuleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzeeeeeeeee!
Maybe they were more subtle & only made themselves heard behind closed doors, but I cannot believe they were vapid shells who lounged around waiting to be used & abused by men...no way! I'd be willing to wager women in those times were far more manipulative & subtle, far more seductive & conniving.
And don't get me started on Helen!
Her character was a pathetic joke, a blue ribbon toy poodle! I bet in real life she was a self absorbed, manipulative shrew who seduced Paris into stealing her away in the hopes that she could eventually seduce Hector (or at the very least be the ruler of her own destiny. We are in agreement that Paris was a sex crazed dumb@$$ teenager who couldn't buy a clue or a vowel for that matter!)
I would also have liked to see the Eudorus character expanded upon. Vincent Regan, Hell of an actor! Hope to see him REAL soon in ANYTHING (or nothin' at all...but I digress)!!
Gotta get back to work!
Later!

Re: Troy
Hey Brennna,
I agree about the women. I just finished reading the Odessey and was pretty amazed. Also, from reading both the script for Troy and the Ilaid, they softened Hector up! I nthe script he threatened to tear Paris'face of if he didn't leave Helen alone!
But in legend, Aphrodite cast a spell, making Paris irresistable to Helen. Also, legend says she tired of him quickly and helped both the Greek and the Troyans when Troy fell. So even in legend they cant make up their minds who Helen is.
I think women back then (just as women in some cultures now) just worked with what they had. We do the same now.
Maybe Saffron did have more... her character could have... Her life must have been hell...
But still... Hector's character stood out more then Achilles to me, simply because it seemed like he had more against him.

Ladies,
They changed so much in the movie from the book and from Greek Mythology that you don't want to get me started...like Menelaus was only King of Sparta because he married Helen...the only reason all the Greeks followed Agamemnon and Menelaus to Troy was because they had sworn a pact to help Menelaus if anything ever happened to Helen...Helen was born a princess of Sparta...and loads more.
Saffron Burrows is not a good actress. I've seen her in other things and she isn't very good. In fact, the best role I've seen her play is Andromache. I try and think of the lines being delivered by another actress who is more relaxed and emotional, and it changes the whole scheme of the role.
I'm going to get off my soap box now.
Cheers.
Yeeeah! Exactly! Personally I love how they changed some things, especially how they changed Achilles...in the book he's definitely very very cruel, he doesn't cry on Hector's corpse...he was even gay, since Patroclus was his lover and NOT his cousin!
Briseis was a slave and had no kind of relationship with Hector & Co.
I like how they made it more romance like and gave humanity even to Achilles...they brought me to a point where I didnt really know who to side with!
Andromachae deserved definitely more space in the movie...
Man, I wish I could write more, but I've to work!!!
I'll surely come on this!

Re: Troy
see Safron Burrows in Deep Blue and you will see the exact same character. (anyway, I think it is Deep Blue. the one about the monster sharks????) I agree with Tigg as I have seen her in a number of other roles and don't think she's that good....now that woman in Gladiator, who played Joaquin's sister....woh...she was good....I could see her as Andromochae.
Anyway.....yes, I think we can all agree that Troy was WAAY different....plus, what appealed to me in the original legend is the gods who interfere and who are players in the whole thing from beginning to end.
