THE TIMES TRAVELER,S WIFE THE MOVIE
When I was in college, my friends and I would go to movie screenings all the time. It was a fun way to see movies for free before they were released in theaters. A few weeks ago my book group was able to attend the very first showing of the movie "The Time Traveler's Wife" starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. I have not read the book (most people in the book group had read it before so it was not one of our choices) but my friends all loved it and so I was really looking forward to the movie. It did not disappoint!
Before seeing the movie I had very little knowledge of the plot. A man travels through time, not by his choice. He's married to a woman who cannot time travel. That was about it. After seeing the movie I would recommend the book because it must be filled with amazingly rich descriptions of the main characters, their motivations and emotions. The story is also unique and interesting. This is a short plot description for the book and movie.
Audrey Niffenegger's innovative debut, The Time Traveler's Wife, is the story of Clare, a beautiful art student, and Henry, an adventuresome librarian, who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity in his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's marriage and their passionate love for each other as the story unfolds from both points of view. Clare and Henry attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals—steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. I cannot say much about the movie without giving away major plot lines so I will just say that the actors did an excellent job conveying intense emotions. I basically cried the whole movie and not because any one scene was overwhelmingly powerful. I cried because the actors were dealing with intense and confusing emotions and situations in a very realistic way. It is amazing for me to care so much for characters in a movie. From the first scene, I cared about Henry and wanted him to find some way to find peace and center in his life. When McAdams (Clare) appears on screen it is believable that she has known Henry since she was six. It was obvious that Henry had found what he needed. Their love story is intense and original. This movie has a November 2008 release date so there is a long wait but I recommend it highly.
