'Star Trek' Has A Villian: Eric Bana Recruited For Flick

Over the last few months, J.J. Abrams' much-hyped "Star Trek" relaunch flick has been stealthily acquiring young stars to step into some of sci-fi's most iconic roles. Now, two more potential names have set our phasers to stunned.

Eric Bana has signed on and Chris Pine is in final talks to play the villainous Nero and James T. Kirk, respectively. The duo will be filling out a prequel-minded Enterprise bridge that already includes Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoë Saldana as Uhura, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov and Leonard Nimoy as an older version of the pointy-eared Vulcan science officer.

While it is still unknown whether the legendary William Shatner will, like Nimoy, appear alongside his character's younger self, the latest "Trek" leak has revealed that Pine is in talks to portray the yellow-shirted commander's distinguished time at the Starfleet Academy. Pine, a 27-year-old heartthrob best known for movies like "Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement" (and for being the son of none other than "CHiPs" Sergeant Getraer, Robert Pine), recently raised eyebrows with a gritty, chameleonic performance in the shoot-'em-up thriller "Smokin' Aces."

Until now, the deadliest adversary Pine has tangled with was Lindsay Lohan in "Just My Luck." If his casting goes through, however, Pine will be graduating from It-girl insanity to a "Munich" madman. Bana has signed on the dotted line to play a mysterious new character whose name is derived from the legendary Roman emperor, but it is unknown whether he'll be human, alien, Vulcan or none of the above.

Currently, Abrams is planning to beam Bana, Quinto and the others onto the "Trek" set from November through March, targeting a firm Christmas '08 release. Remaining roles to be filled in the next few weeks include persnickety medical officer "Bones" McCoy, over-worked engineer "Scotty" Scott, and -- with any luck -- a bearded Verne Troyer will be portraying a young Tribble looking for trouble.

Star Trek Movie Begins Filming on Location Today

The new Star Trek movie prequel begins shooting today and sources told Trek Movie Report that this week's shooting with director J.J. Abrams will be on location (somewhere in Southern California), with the first shots on the Paramount lot scheduled to be filmed next week.

According to Trek Movie, it is Abrams intention to use ‘real' locations as often as possible and limit the stage work to the starships and other science-fiction type locales. Also, according to the site, the latter half of filming will focus on the Paramount lot, including shooting on the new starship Enterprise ship sets, which are still under construction. Filming will end on March 2008.

Starring Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana and John Cho, the Star Trek movie is scheduled to open in theaters on December 25, 2008.

TrekWeb will keep you update on any news on the filming.

More info on the shooting can be found at Trek Movie Report

Re: STAR TREK

STAR TREK XI MISCASTING JUST ABOUT COMPLETE

Looking at the cast list of Star Trek XI I see that the only person who I find really exciting is Eric Bana as the bad guy. If the rest of the bridge crew had been better cast I might have been psyched about Simon Pegg as Scotty, but he's surrounded by third rate actors who probably couldn't anchor a TV show

There are not many more announcements to be made on this film, casting-wise, especially as it started filming yesterday, but I trust that director JJ Abrams will continue making bad choices, much like he has done with the casting of Captain Pike, the guy in charge of the Enterprise before Kirk came to town. He's put Bruce Greenwood in the role, and it's weird to say that Greenwood is a bad choice for anything, since I think he's a fine actor. But he's a terrible choice for Captain Pike, a guy who was the prototype for Kirk (literally - the original Star Trek pilot had Pike as the captain and NBC asked Gene Roddenberry to shoot a new one with some new cast members. Thanks to a two-parter in the original series, the events of that first pilot were made canon in the Trek universe). Pike's the kind of role that should have gone to somebody with a little more name recognition, who could add a touch of heft to this lightweight cast... and someone who is a couple of years younger than Greenwood. Greenwood has a decade on original Pike Jeffrey Hunter, plus he looks older anyway. By the way, I do have faith that Greenwood could possibly pull this off, and he's far from the worst casting choice on this picture. That honor must go to Karl Urban as McCoy. Seriously, what the ****?

At this point all I can do is hope that there's an actual vision to the bizarre casting and seemingly inane storyline for Star Trek XI (real title to be revealed via a year long viral internet meme game, I'm sure). I want this movie to work very, very much.

Star Trek Trailer Online Jan 21st - New Movie Site Coming January 9, 2008
by Anthony Pascale , Filed under: Star Trek (2008 film) , trackback
Next Friday January 18th the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek hits screens across the country in front of Cloverfield. And if you aren’t headed to a theater, then according to Paramount you will have to wait until Monday the 21st to see it online. The trailer will be available at all the usual locations for trailers and a new movie website.

TrekMovie.com has confirmed there will be a new dedicated promotional website for the movie which should go live next weekend. Like with previous films, the site will be linkable off of startrek.com and have its own URL. Right now it is unclear if the site will go live on the 18th or wait until the 21st.

What will we see?
As usual details are hard to get with regards to anything Trek, but the trailer has been described to TrekMovie.com as “very much a teaser.” A source says that there will be no live action shots of any of the film stars in the teaser. It has been confirmed that the Enterprise will be seen being constructed, but you will not see it in full detail

Eric Bana Boldly Goes On About New ‘Star Trek’
0 Comments | Published by Shawn Adler on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 4:29 pm.
Newly minted “Star Trek” baddie Eric Bana recently threw the Trek fan community a curveball when he told several reporters that his role in the J.J. Abrams reboot amounted to little more than a cameo appearance.

“[But] it’s a good cameo!” the “Hulk” star enthused, a wide grin across his face.

Cameo or not, Bana knows a lot rests on his Romulan shoulders, especially given that the “Trek” movies have always been defined in large part by the success (or failure) of their villains. Nero’s quest may take him to the city on the edge of forever, but viewers won’t have to go that far back to find iconic bad guys like the Borg or Khan for comparison.

It’s an assessment Bana can’t help but make himself, the actor admitted to MTV News.

“To a degree you can’t help yourself,” he said. “Every script I’ve done I’ve treated the script like the Bible. That’s the word. That’s the starting point — but then you [always] go from there.”

But while Bana might make the comparison, should you find yourself doing the same thing … well, then he’s already won you over.

“I’m a bit of a Trek fan. I wouldn’t say I was a huge Trekkie when I was a kid, but I’ve enjoyed them over the years,” Bana said of his knowledge of the most epic canon villains. “[But] I think that if I get compared to any of them [by the fans], I’ll be doing well.”

Surprisingly, Bana still has time to think it over, revealing to MTV that he hasn’t even started filming yet.

“I have the plum gig coming up at the very end [of the shoot],” he smiled.

Which gives us plenty of time to offer advice. What would you say Bana should keep in mind on the eve of the “Star Trek” shooting? Sound off below

Re: STAR TREK

Bana Says Nero Is The Main Trek Villain

He’s going to be part of one of the biggest movies of the year, but Eric Bana is a modest guy. When asked earlier this month about his role as Nero in the upcoming Star Trek, as Josh reported, he claimed the part would just be a cameo. But at a press junket in New York today for the upcoming The Other Boleyn Girl, he clarified that he may have underestimated himself a little bit.

When asked by a journalist if Nero would in fact be the main villain, Bana said, ”I guess he kind of is.” Bana went on to explain that compared to other roles he’s done, like the Hulk in The Hulk or Hector in Troy, Nero is a smaller part. “It’s not one of those roles where you’re carrying the movie. I feel like I’m very much in a supporting role.

He also said that he had been a fan of the original Star Trek series as a kid, but it was his friendship with director J.J. Abrams and Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman’s script that convinced him to sign on. “Even if I was crazy about the original series that wouldn’t have been enough to make me sign on to a film I didn’t want to do. I read the script and I went, ‘That is an awesome script.’ It was a very easy decision.”

So fear not, Trekkies! The badass who avenged Israel in Munich and battled with Brad Pitt in Ancient Greece will certainly give Captains Kirk and Spock a run for their money in Star Trek. Bana hasn’t started work on the Star Trek set yet, even though filming has already begun, so we at least know he’s not in every shot. But, if Nero’s the main villain, you can pretty much guarantee you’ll be getting plenty of Bana.

Check back here later this week for more of our press conference with Eric Bana, in which he talks about what it takes to be as sexy as Henry VIII and how to stay a happily married man when you’ve got Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson as co-stars (and you thought getting a part in Star Trek was lucky).
