source:http://www.moviehole.net/news/20061120_bana_joining_kidman_for_compas.html
Australia’s Eric Bana looks set to join fellow countryman Nicole Kidman in “His Dark Materials : The Golden Compass”, according to a report on the Coming Soon website.
Quoting an interview that “Casino Royale” sexpot Eva Green recently gave Studio Mag, the site says that Bana’s one of three new blokes onboard – the other two being Kevin Bacon and screen veteran John Hurt.
Kidman plays Mrs. Coulter in Chris Weitz's upcoming movie based on the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Philip Pullman. No word on who Bana is playing yet.
The abovementioned trilogy is comprised of "The Golden Compass," "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass". It revolves around a young girl who travels to the far north to save her best friend. Along the way, she encounters shape-shifting creatures, witches, and a variety of otherworldly characters in parallel universes.”
(Bit of a “Bond” connection with the film – Eva Green and Daniel Craig are reuniting for this one)
possible new project for Eric Bana

Re: Bana Alerts
After film success, pastor turns focus to Sudan crisis
Adrian G. Uribarri | Sentinel Staff Writer
July 5, 2007
LEESBURG - Two years after his first low-budget movie was a hit in the faith-based film circuit, a minister is going Hollywood with a $15 million film about the crisis in Sudan.
"It's going to be difficult for some people that a pastor wrote this story," said Art Ayris, executive pastor of First Baptist Church of Leesburg. "It deals with rape. It deals with female genital mutilation. It deals with human bondage."
Beyond the Sun, based on Ayris' screenplay about a farmer trying to reclaim his daughter from slave traders, is being produced by the same team that helped back the Academy Award-nominated 2004 movie Hotel Rwanda. Mennan Yapo, director of this year's Premonition, starring Sandra Bullock, has signed on to the film.
The Tinseltown triumph is heady stuff for a Leesburg minister raised in Fruitland Park who has been plugging away at his film hobby for years.
"I had this really strong sense that this was a special story, that it would go far," said Ayris, 50, who also owns a religious graphic-novel company, Kingstone Media Group.
The film will be shot in Los Angeles and South Africa, far from the Lake County sets of The Touch, Ayris' 2005 film made on a $200,000 budget.
"This is about genocide in Sudan," Ayris said. "Thematically, it's the same in that it is about suffering. There are some elements of faith in there, but it's not as overt as The Touch."
The Touch is about how a drug-addicted homeless woman finds refuge in a church shelter such as the one Ayris helped build in Leesburg. The movie became a hit in the Middle East when the Cyprus-based satellite service SAT-7 translated it into Arabic and beamed it into millions of homes in the region.
It was later translated into Farsi and Hakka Chinese and sold in Target stores throughout Australia.
Ayris' inspiration for Beyond the Sun came as he was reading an article about rural southern Sudan, where a farmer returned to his burned-down village and learned that guerillas had kidnapped his wife and daughters.
"He did everything he could to get money," Ayris said. "And he walked barefoot north for days. . . . When he found his family, he only had enough money to buy back his 5-year-old and his wife."
His older daughter, approaching sexual maturity and able to work, could have been sold as a sex slave.
Sam Feuer, who is producing the film with Richard Harding, said it's a tale that needs to be told. In 2004, Feuer and Harding's Sixth Sense Productions raised part of the financing for Hotel Rwanda, a critically acclaimed $17 million film about civil war in that country. It grossed $23.5 million domestically, Feuer said.
"The western world is very fortunate to be able to bring these stories to light," he said, "and we should."
Future Films, which backed the soccer comedy Bend it Like Beckham, is helping with funding. Creative Artists Agency will cast the actors, whom Ayris said could include Jim Caviezel, who played the title character in The Passion of the Christ; Christian Bale, the latest actor to play Batman; or Eric Bana, the star of Steven Spielberg's Munich. Feuer mentioned Colin Farrell as another possible lead actor.
"It is hard to push this story in the mainstream market," Feuer said of Beyond the Sun. " 'Hotel Rwanda' took five years to make."
The project could face challenges in a movie market ever hungry for blockbuster special effects, but it comes as Hollywood stars are taking a vigorous stand on the crisis in Sudan.
During the Cannes Film Festival in May, George Clooney led an effort to raise $9 million for the Not On Our Watch foundation, which focuses attention on the war-torn Darfur region. Spielberg matched a $1 million donation to the organization from Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
The literary world also has pounced on the issue, backing Ayris' story with a possible book deal.
Ann Collette, Ayris' agent at the Helen Rees Literary Agency, said she initially was reluctant to represent such an inexperienced prose writer.
"Just because you can write a screenplay does not mean you can write a novel," she said. "But I just couldn't let it go because of the subject matter. It was relevant, contemporary and deeply emotional."
Collette recruited Ninie Hammon, a Christian author who co-wrote a book involving medical miracles, to rework Ayris' story. While both writers share their faith, Collette said, the book will not use a heavy hand with spirituality.
"There's a religious undertone, but it's tempered," she said. "By making it too religious, we would cut out too much of the audience."
Both the film and the book, which Collette plans to market to Penguin Putnam and HarperCollins, could be released in fall 2008. Ayris said he spoke with his wife, Kelly, about what to do with the proceeds.
"I'm not going to give it all away -- don't get me wrong -- but a portion of it is definitely going to go to Sudan," he said. "If I'm going to profit from telling a story about suffering, my conscience can't do anything but help."

Re: Bana Alerts
To the max
OSCAR-anointed Adam Elliot rarely sees the light of day, slaving 24/7 on his new, big-budget, claymation feature Mary & Max, about an eight-year-old Melbourne girl and her penpal, a Noo Yawker with Asperger syndrome. Songstress Renee Geyer is the latest voice to be cast, as Mary's mother, joining Toni Collette as Mary, Eric Bana as Max, and narrator extraordinaire Barry Humphries, CBE. Since Harvie Krumpet catapulted Elliot into the Oscar-osphere, there's no pressure on him to wow Hollywood with Mary & Max. None at all.

Re: Bana Alerts
$10m taste of Hollywood Down Under
HOLLYWOOD hero Eric Bana, aka The Incredible Hulk, is creating a $10 million mansion to match his star status.
The home -- complete with tennis court, swimming pool and a nine-car underground garage for the keen rally fan -- is to become the star's showpiece in Brighton.
The house, in a quiet street a few hundred metres from the bay, is under major renovation. It will resemble a small hotel more than a home.
The spectacular renovation will see a double-storey extension emerge from behind the front rooms of the existing house.
It has walls of glass in an expansive rear living space and is believed to contain six bedrooms and three bathrooms on a block of more than 2000sq m.
Workers are spending more than a year transforming the property by upgrading the existing rooms and doubling the size of the house with the extension.
The building site is watched by security cameras.
Estate agents suggest the finished house will be worth between $8 million and $10 million. But even at that price, the property will not have views of the water.
Bana, a former Melbourne comedian, has starred in Chopper, Black Hawk Down, The Hulk, Troy and Steven Spielberg's Munich.
He bought the property in 2005 for $3.8 million and is believed to be spending far more than $1 million on the rebuilding. Bana is in North America filming The Time Traveller's Wife, a romantic drama about a Chicago librarian with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, causing complications for his marriage.
His next project will be a blockbuster remake of Star Trek
