Stars give energy to AFI awards

AUSSIEWOOD stars Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger and Sam Neill will join Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe at the Australian Film Institute annual awards, to be held tonight and tomorrow night.
Host Geoffrey Rush has been nominated for best supporting actor for his role in Candy. Vying with him in the category are Ronald Jacobson, for his role as the father in Kenny, Tom Budge (Last Train to Freo) and Anthony Hayes (Suburban Mayhem). Hayes won last year's award for his role in Look Both Ways.
Rush said the awards had been in the doldrums two years ago, mirroring the local production industry.
They had screened on every free-to-air channel in the preceding six years.
But last year they were energised by host Russell Crowe, and on Thursday Channel Nine is televising them from 9.30pm.
Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down, Hulk) is a late addition to the line-up, which will also feature a video message from Johnny Depp, Rush's co-star in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Bana 'signs up for The Golden Compass'
Eric Bana has become the latest actor to sign up for the film version of the Philip Pullman novel The Golden Compass, according to reports.
The Incredible Hulk actor is reported to be joining the New Line cinema production, which already has Nicole Kidman and Bond star Daniel Craig confirmed as taking part.
If the reports, which emerged on the French website elbakin.net, are true then other stars signing up alongside Bana include Kevin Bacon and John Hurt.
The news was announced by Bond girl Eva Green, who will appear as the witch Serafina Pekkala in the film.
Kidman is set to play Marisa Coulter, while Craig will star as Lord Asriel. Newcomer Dakota Blue Richards is the lucky actress who has landed the role of Lyra Belacqua.
The film is due to be screened in UK cinemas in December 2007.
In Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, Lyra has to travel to the far north in order to save her best friend.
