Cream of Australian film arrives on tour

The London Australian Film Festival is one of the cinematic highlights of the Barbican's year. But rather than keeping the goodies for London audiences alone, an annual UK touring programme, organised with the assistance of the Australian Film Commission, is bringing the cream of down under to the Edinburgh Filmhouse and the Glasgow Film Theatre over the coming weeks.

'I suspect most people will know that Australian cinema, like the British film industry, tends to ebb and flow; there were major developments in the 1970s, and again in the 1990s with films such as The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert and Strictly Ballroom,' says the Barbican's head of cinema, Robert Rider.

'I think the films on the tour will demonstrate that this is another very strong period for Australian cinema.' In the past, Australia has produced directors such as Baz Luhrmann, Peter Weir, George Miller and Ray Lawrence, plus stars such as Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman.

Aside from such individual successes, Rider believes there are a number of reasons why Australia is currently punching above its weight. 'There's more American investment, what with studios being built and big films such as Star Wars being shot there, which certainly broadens out the number of people who are employed in film,' Rider explains.

And in the short term, the rising stars of Australian cinema are offering plentiful entertainment for Scottish audiences. 'It's very surprising that a film such as Romulus, My Father hasn't already been shown in the UK. It stars Eric Bana, who was in Troy and Munich, and Franka Potente from Run Lola Run.

It's based on the childhood memoirs of philosopher Raimond Gaita, and it's a beautiful and yet tragic story,' says Rider. 'When you have films as good as that in the festival, it's a clear sign that Australian cinema is riding a wave right now.'
