Re: About Bana
Citizen Eric says PM fails test
AUSTRALIAN movie star Eric Bana might well have been Croatian movie star Eric Bana if new citizenship tests had been introduced when his parents migrated Down Under.
The star of Hollywood blockbusters is the son of migrants from Croatia and Germany and yesterday told The Daily Telegraph the tough new regulations would have made it difficult for his family to migrate had they been imposed at the time.
"My father spoke very limited English, my mother was slightly more fluent," he said.
"I know for a fact my grandparents would not have passed any of those tests. I would not be standing here had those tests been enforced in the late 1940s."
Under new measures announced by Prime Minister John Howard in December, migrants applying for Australian citizenship would need to complete a 30-question test on their knowledge of Australian institutions and values and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
Prospective citizens would be required to pass a verbal English test, with exemptions for those older than 65.
They would also have to sign a pledge promising to uphold values such as respect for freedom and commitment to the rule of law.
It emerged yesterday that the cost of the new citizenship test would be $14.6 million.
An appropriations Bill before the House of Representatives sought the extra money to help implement the test, which would be available online for prospective citizens. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship has created an internal working party to determine what questions will be on the citizenship test and is expected to report this month to parliamentary secretary for immigration and citizenship Teresa Gambaro.
Bana, back in Melbourne with his family after a string of Hollywood roles including Munich and Troy, visited Parliament House this week to promote his latest film Romulus, My Father.
The movie explores the relationship between a boy and his father and details community attitudes to migrants to Australia in the 1950s.
"It was very close to home, being the son of two migrants, I related to the role very strongly," he said

Eric Bana in video game
source:http://www.ugo.com/channels/games/features/masterchief/masterchief2.asp
8. Eric Bana
Eric Bana could easily pull this off. His resume reeks of the Master Chief. He's proved that he can play the soldier in Black Hawk Down. He had smoldering gravitas to burn in Munich, and both Chopper and Hulk showed darker sides to this fine actor. Plus, the chicks dig him. He's just what the franchise needs, a star who isn't locked into another property or isn't so big that he'd outgrow the part. If Halo is going to be a trilogy, PJ and Microsoft are going to need a guy who's going to stick around and truly make the character his own. Bana may just be that man. He makes men go gay when he puts on an American accent. That's why they should put Bana in the role.

Eric Bana to race in Targa Tasmania
2nd March 2007, 15:54 WST
Hollywood actor Eric Bana will drive his treasured Ford Falcon XB GT coupe in the Targa Tasmania tarmac rally in April.
The star of Chopper, Troy and Munich has owned his beloved car for 23 years and has just completed a major two-year restoration on it.
Bana, who made his Targa Tasmania debut in 1996, has taken time this week to familiarise himself with the roads to be used in the 2007 tour around the state.
Event director Mark Perry says Melbourne-born Bana has shown good form in a range of motorsport events.
"Eric is a good steerer and the car he has prepared is an absolutely beautiful piece of machinery," Mr Perry said.
He predicted that Bana could sneak into the top 10 "if he has a good run".
Bana said he would relish the chance to be behind the wheel rather than in front of the camera.
"The car has been a labour of love, really," Bana said.
"Targa Tasmania is a fantastic showcase of classic cars, and I reckon our XB GT Coupe should bring back a lot of good memories for many of the fans watching the rally as it makes its way around Tasmania."

Bana back for Targa Tasmania thrill
Hollywood actor Eric Bana will star in April's Targa Tasmania.
Bana will drive a restored Ford Falcon XB GT coupe in the event. It is a car he has owned since he was 15.
The actor competed in Targa in 1996 and would have returned earlier if not for work commitments.
Bana says he loves the thrill of driving.
"I don't have any other experience in life that compares to how much your heart pumps out of your chest during a tarmac rally stage," he said.
"I just don't think anything compares to it - circuit racing, performing live, doing stand-up comedy, being on a tonight show."
Bana says his experiences during Targa Tasmania will be included in a motor sport documentary he is making.
