Chasing bows and silvers

Cousins from Tennessee arrived last week looking forward to the fishing Alaska is famous for. We started North along the Parks to find Little Su, Willow and the others pushing their banks, running Mud. It was obvious the rain swollen streams wouldn't be fishable soon, so we kept driving til we hit the visitor center at Denali. After an hour there, we started across the Denali highway from Cantwell.

The streams along the Denali we up slightly, but clear and we camped at Tangle Lakes catching Grayling from the stream and lake. After passing Paxson, we stopped at the Gulkana, picking up a few grayling in off-colored water. With plans of heading south to the Kenai Peninsula, we pushed on through Glenallen stopping at Mendeltna Creek. I've wanted to fish Mendeltna for years and driven over it many times, always with plans to be somewhere else. It's a small, slow moving stream with flowing moss beds and a good Grayling population. During our hour stop, we took several nice fish in the 16 inch range.

The following afternoon, we arrived at the Russian River. Bows and Dolly's were aggressive to flesh or a 6mm bead painted to match the natural eggs. The Reds were mostly gone with small pods of Silvers well upstream of the confluence.

We floated the Kenai from Sportsmens to Jims the following 3 days. Bright red Sockeye were everywhere and essentially a nuisance. It was tough to get a clean drift for trout without fowl-hooking a sockeye or having them pick up your fly. In addition, there was so much flesh and eggs in the water, we worked hard for bows and dolly's.

We found Silvers mixed with the reds in several spots, but again, it was tough to target silvers without hooking Reds. The water was up but clear and the fishing should steadily improve through the middle of next month.

Brad.
