groovy cellar, the regal, sweet charity

was one of the cheshunt/enfield mods and we used to make many a trip to the groovy cellar. great fun arriving on our scooters, and taking off our parkas to reveal those fantastic paisley shirts from the regal. the groovy cellar was a great little club. i always preferred it to the mod clubs cos the birds were much fitter. they were all mary quant minis and peggy moffatt haircuts. the groovy cellar was so cool it could even afford to turn away paul weller!

the regal in kensington market and newburgh st was a great little shop. expensive, but that was ok, cos it kept the tickets out. sweet charity was a girls stall in kensington market, but they made some great hipsters for the boys.

the bands from the psych scene were dreadful, but they put on some great happenings. i remember going on a psychedelic boat trip down the thames, grooving at the cafe royal and a couple of swinging parties at the london dungeon.

mike jones and his brother nick from the playn jayn were two ace faces from this time. they were both riding their scooters around bournemouth before the mod thing happened. mike and eddie pillar had a bit of a punch up in the regal, i seem to recall. mike was a top bloke and the playn jayn one of the better bands from the mod revival scene. mad as a march hare, but he had some great threads.

the whole scene only lasted for a few months and coincided with the release of 'sound affects'. there was a film being made at the time called 'the groovy movie' which probably has some great images from this time. don't think it ever made it to celluoid though!

anyone else there?

I love things, I do my best, I eat, sleep and laugh and cry just like the rest, what becomes of me is meant to be, so I'll just groove along quite naturally....

we used to go to the parties at the London Dingeon and had hipsters from Sweet Charity...really enjoyed the communal mixed changing room.

I never was into this psychedelia stuff but a few of my friends were, I went to see a few of the bands though ... and visited Regal & Co.

It's funny I was talking with one of them about todays swirlies and he admitted they were so far removed from the 81/82 scene - more 70's rock than Swingin London.

Out of all the clubs going on in the 80,s in London , this is the one that fascinates me most and the one I most wanted to go to
