weird experience Friday night at a mod party
This was a mad one.
Old mod mates from loughton (who I havent seen for about 15 years) had a joint birthday party (they were twins) on saturday night. I went along not really knowing to expect. They had billed it as a mod party (?) and everyone was encouraged to go in some of their old gear.
There were a couple of hundred people at the club (it was held in the City) and I had to say that there were loads of fat, balding blokes wearing their old boating blazers. Everybody entered into the spirit of the thing, there were lots of the former Essex mods present and everyone seemed swept up in a misty eyed nostalgia. Great soul music was supplied by Al Bastock (ex Walthamstow mods) and he played all the old Nightingale and Regency Classics.
Anyway, two things happened that were worthy of note. The first was that on arrival (I was wearing a pink seersucker threepiece suit with a double breasted covered button waistcoat that I had made in about 83, with a pink shirt and silk scarf and Buckler glasses. Perhaps a bit camp freddy but I was at least pleased that it still fit me. I hand't worn it since 1984)...
Anyway, two girls came straight up to me and asked if they could have their photo taken. A bit odd but I eventually agreed...Ten minutes later they both came up, totally apologetic saying that they thought I was a Paul Weller lookalike that had been booked for the evening and their husbands (both of whom I knew from the East London mods) had explained that I wasnt actually in fancy dress and that I always looked like that.
How bad was that. I dont look anything like Paul Weller but because of my haircut I have had 4 people approach me in the last month alone. (one at the last test match, one by the back door at Weller's recent Music Machine gig - who asked me to sign a copy of Stanley Road, and one person as I was walking through the West End). Mental.
Secondly was that the twins had booked a live set by The Jamm. Now I have never been vaguely interested in Tribute Bands. I always thought that they were sad and crap.
After all, I saw the Jam well over 50 times and I could never imagine anything that could have come close to competing.
Well, when the Jamm started playing I was outside and couldnt see them. No word of a lie. This band WERE The Jam, it was uncanny. The sounded, spoke and played like the Jam that I remembered, but the only difference was that they played all the songs, and I mean all, that you could ever have wanted to hear. The Jam never did that. Weller was always moving forward and kept dropping the old stuff as he came up with new songs. The band even played The Bitterest Pill, which I dont think The Jam ever did.
The lead singer was a dead ringer for Paul Weller too, but when I spoke to him afterwards, he had a northern accent - on stage he was pure Woking
The whole experience left me feeling confused. The band were brilliant, I had a fantastic time BUT I WENT TO A FANCY DRESS NIGHT WEARING MY OWN CLOTHES...I should have been embarrassed but I wasn't.
Now I know what it's like at Modstock

Re: weird experience Friday night at a mod party
"Who's that bloke over there - is it Paul Piller?"
"Don't be daft it's Eddie Weller!"
That's when you've gotta worry Ed.
I liked the Jamm. Excellent version of A Bomb.
I asked Foxton and Buckler once why they weren't doing anything off of The Modern World album anymore (it was early 79 by now) and they said "ask Paul cos he always writes the set list". They weren't best pleased by the sound of it.
Paul Weller - contemporary guy.

Although we were all trying to tell each other our life stories as quick as we could
Very good band and I'm gonna make the effort to catch them again.
