Common People - Britpop The Story
Brit Pop as a scene was a paradigm moment... A shift from scruffy, scuzzy Americanism to sharp, glam, intelligent Britishness.
Though it is often credited exclusively to the pantomime rivalry between Oasis and Blur, there was far more to the movement than their 'commercially beneficial' celebrity feud.
Bands like Suede, The Auteurs, Saint Etienne and Denim heralded wave after wave of exciting, exuberant artists, including Supergrass, Elastica, The Bluetones, Gene and Pulp. Across the country from Camden Lock to Sheffield, Glastonbury to Manchester, the football terraces to the Prime Minister, everyone was singing along and celebrating a golden age of British music.
The sound of the movement is captured perfectly by Common People - Britpop : The Story; a 3CD set compiled to include the big names, a lot of forgotten gems and everything else in between. Buy Common People - Britpop : The Story from HMV for £11.99 here.
As Clash Magazine said 'this is a first class document of the Britpop years and its numerous musical highlights - 8/10'

When they are talking about sharp and glam are they referring to Blur and their permanently "out of bed to sign on" look? or how about Jarvis ****er and his paedo maths teacher ensemble?
When they say intelligent surely they can't be referring to Liam Gallagher who makes a dead otter look like Stephen Hawking? or perhaps the singer from Sleeper who talked so much incoherent ****e about every subject under the sun that you honestly believed the sewers of Calcutta had just burst their banks every time you read a quote by her?
I'm sorry but that is revisionism of the highest order.
A small few gems of songs came out of Britpop in my opinion and a couple of good bands (I'd include The Bluetones and perhaps Supergrass in that) but it held no interest for me at the time nor does it now.
There were much better bands under the radar of the knobs in the music press at the time on the garage and mod scene and that's where I was.
Just as a matter of interest, will this be getting a vinyl release? It's for a friend you understand............

Re: Common People - Britpop The Story
bit harsh Bik ?
Britpop made a change from what had been around and like most music it was fun while it was new.
Who were the mod bands still going in the mid 90's ? I didn't really pay too much attention to be honest so I don't know.

Re: Common People - Britpop The Story
Some of my favourite bands from that period include:
The Clique
The Jaybirds
The Aardvarks
The Mourning After (can't find a clip for them)
The Prime Movers
There were also a lot of revival style mod bands such as The Direction and The Tin Soldiers getting 7"s released on Detour during the mid 90s.

Re: Common People - Britpop The Story
nice one Bik.. i have a few Clique singles.. were they the Jukes (? pretty sure that was their name) previously ? I saw them once or twice I think.
The others are good too... similar to The Creeps, Chocolate Factory.. should keep me clicking away for a bit.
being an old fart I just liked the sound of Britpop.. I didn't really know much about the people involved but as you say there is always something out there that the music press don't cover but nothing new there as most of those types you wouldn't p*ss on if they were on fire

Re: Common People - Britpop The Story
Those most deffo were the days..... every week there seemed to be some exciting new guitar based indie band that wanted to be the b'stard sons of Weller, Daltrey, Marriott, or Davies, the 7" new releases box at the 2 local record shops near to where i used to live had no end of tunes from new bands that sounded the bollox, Thurman, 60 foot dolls, Ash, These Animal Men, Velcro, The Weekenders, Mantaray, there are loads more, most were one hit wonders some went on to bigger an better things, looking back on it now, with the shelvess i keep it all on bulging at the seams, it was a fantastic shot in the arm for vinyl junkies like myself, most of the 7's were under a pound ( i bought 4 copies of "i'll manage somehow" for £3.96, an sold 2 for £50.00 each ) good times indeed.
Bik, you're forgetting Dog, & The Gift Horses, and on Detour The Revs, The Most, The Persauders etc etc etc.
And the 3 songs that caused the split ???
Blur - There's no other way.
The Charlatans - The only one i know.
Stone Roses - Fools Gold.
All 3 of them are classics, it's a shame the split happened, and i don't think blame can be laid at the feet of just these tunes, they were of a time, an at the time, they were good.
