2007 Swamp Cabbage Festival Invitational
The 2007 Swamp Cabbage Festival Invitational is in the books! We had a total of 35 Racers representing NASGRASS, GRASSCAR, and the FLA racing 38 mowers in the Drags, 8 Circle/Oval track classes, and the 30 Lap Enduro!! The 30 Lap Enduro saw 14 racers battle it out in 2 classes of mowers, the Twins, and the Singles did battle on the long oval at the Labelle track. The spectators, and racers, all enjoyed a GREAT day of racing!
We were also in the Parade that morning with all three clubs being well represented with bannners for all clubs as well as the event sponsors being displayed! One racer even "scared" a motorcycle Police officer into dropping his bike, (we won't mention any names, but I won't be going to Labelle anytime soon with the #73 Outlaw Twin on an open trailer!) the crowd LOVED seeing the mowers as always!
Jerry will be posting the results, and the points, on our website soon so check it out to see who finished where! As in the past this event was a Double Points event for the NASGRASS racers to show our appreciation for your support of our club! Thanks again to all who attended this first ever invitational event!
I want to also thank Rich DeMuzzio for his tireless work that again made this event not only possible, but the GREAT event that it was! Rich single handedly raised over $2,400 in Event Sponsor donations, and was instrumental in the donation of $3,000 from the Hendry County Tourist Development council, for a total of over $5,400!!!!! The 50/50 donations totalled $714 for a split of $357, and the Gate brought in $2,228! I think that with a total of a little over $8,000 this was a PHENOMINAL EVENT!!! As we did last year we will be making a donation to Healthy Start, we will announce the amount as soon as the expenses are totalled.
I also want to thank Bob Kirkwood for his work on the track, it really was in GREAT shape all during the event! I want to thank Mike Miller, and the GRASSCAR club, for the use of thier equipment for Tech, and track maintenance, which made the event start in a timely manner.
Thanks also to Tom Ast, President of the Florida Lawnracing Association, for attending with his members to show their committment to the sport of lawnmower racing in Florida! We all saw what a professional group they are, Trudy Ast helped out with registration, Kerry Ast helped out with some photography, and we had to buy some change from the group also! This type of teamwork helps to foster cross memberships between "competing" clubs, which can only make this sport continue to grow!
The only sad note of the day was the announcement by Rich DeMuzzio that he was retiring from lawnmower racing, at 71 I suppose he's entitled to a break! Rich has always set the example for all of us to follow in this sport! He works to make any club he's involved with successful, and does so in a professional manner! My thanks go to him for all of his help with our club, and its events. The next time you see Rich at an event be sure to Thank him, and buy him a beer!
Mow Ya L8R,
Sid Whiteside President NASGRASS Inc.
