Please help, any ideas

Does anyone know or has anyone heard of how to knit/crochet with one hand?

My Nanny had a stroke and only has use of 1 arm (her non-dominant hand) She used to crochet and knit but she is paralyzed on her whole right side.

She also can't really talk, but sort of understands some things.

I've seen a device that actually holds the needle in a clamp, but I don't know how this would work.

Does anyone have any suggestions on if this can be done?

Also, if a device was able to hold the crochet or knitting needle steady could you crochet/knit by using 1 hand and moving the yarn and not the needle?

I know nothing about knitting/crocheting so I don't know that this is even feasible.

From watching others crochet it looks like the crochet hook/needle is moving, so how could you do this by having the needle/hook steady and manipulating the yarn.

Any ideas?

If you want to see the device it is at www.dynamicliving.com under "clamp-it" crochet.

Thanks so much

Hi:
I did some research for you and apparently, it is possible to crochet with one hand. They have several other devices at:

http://crochet.about.com/cs/supplies/

They can also be used for knitting and needlework. I would talk with her therapist to see how she feels about it first, as she may not be able to remember how to crochet. I had a head injury many years ago and crocheting was great therapy for me in aiding
my recovery and it may well help your grandmother as well. Best of luck to you and your family. I hope she is better soon.

Kind Regards,
Susan

Hi:
Me again! They have a book that shows how to crochet with one hand at:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0853700109/026-2695821-1599623

and here is a triple amputee who crochets with one hand. You might want to e-mail her to discuss how its done.
