Mysterious Places

This was originally a topic on the Maya Ruins.. since there seemed to be no great interest, or discussion on that particular subject, I decided to create an area of places in general.

You can discuss the previous topic, or start another one of your interest. There are so many mysterious places, there are probably a lot to choose from.. emoticon

Easter Island

What ya think? There are almost 900 statues on the Island, not all were delivered to their final destination. Most are still in the quarry where they were sculpted.

How do you think they were moved? I'm still going along the lines of thoughts of Coral Castle, some type of levitation.

I've always thought this to be an interesting place to visit...you know, When I win Mega Millions.

Well, this is one place I would love to see for myself.. along with stonehenge.. but, the whole water thing.. hmm.. don't know if I could do it or not..

But, it does fascinate me. I didn't even know they existed until I saw a documentary on it one day before work several years ago, (I got so caught up in it, I was nearly late!)

I don't know how they were moved.. they claim that they used the same technique as the pyramids.. with trees.. but I can't see how a culture would be so obsessed with these massive structures that they would deplete their land of nearly all of their resources.

These structures are so huge, what would be the point? And, why are they all facing the ocean? Was it to guard them?

Such an ancient civilization, brilliant enough to create AND move stones of this size is amazing.

It's more of a money thing for me...the water wouldn't bother me...even though I can't swim a lick. I've been out crabbing in Washington ( Ever watch 'The Most Dangerous Catch'? I think that's what it was called, I can relate ) I used to pick oysters...that spooked me alot. When I was 4 I tried swimming in Lake Michigan with my shoes on. But still am fascinated with oceans & water. Especially the storms.

I'm not thinking logs, I thought I saw something..maybe a different documentary or something, where on the island there wasn't too much available for trees big enough to roll them on. Leave it to me, but I've got a pretty decent LINK on the topic.

Stonehedge I agree with too. I'd like to make it before the Griswolds revisit it. But that place astounds me too.

The documentary that I watched said that one theory was they cut all their trees down in order to move them. After doing this for a period of time, they ended up with very little trees ..

But, I've also heard that this theory is impossible, since the area does not support alot of plant life. I'd have to do a lot of research before I could actually say what I thought happend..

But,.. this was on that site.. and it was rather interesting.. emoticon

quote:

Most center on the mystical idea that the massive megaliths were moved using "mana," or divine power. Those who possessed mana were able to command the moai to walk to their designated places. Accounts of who actually possessed mana differ greatly. In 1919, Katherine Routledge, a British archaeologist who lived on Easter Island for a year, recorded in her journal: "There was a certain old woman who lived at the southern corner of the mountain and filled the position of cook to the image-makers. She was the most important person of the establishment, and moved the images by supernatural powers (mana), ordering them about at her will." Earlier accounts recorded by visitors to the island indicate that statues were ordered to walk by the mythical King Tuu Ku Ihu and the god Make Make. Even specialized priests were known to move moai at the request of those who wanted them on their family land or ahu.

That somewhat goes with my thinking. Not so much having them walk on their own...a very original idea, but just some kind of 'unknown force' That I believe in alot. I think within my lifetime the same forces will be rediscovered.

I think you are right. Who knows? I know we can make all kinds of structures as far as the eye can see, but we couldn't do it without the help of all of our high tech equipment and machines..

I couldn't ever see us work together in a way to create these types of displays with our bare hands and natural resources.. Maybe I'm doubting the human race way too much, but people do not join together now unless it serves THEM a purpose.. and it'd have to be a pretty hefty one at that..

Of all the things we are capable of, working together seems to be one of the toughest for us to accomplish.
