The Voynich Manuscript

Have you ever heard of this? It caught my attention very fast. Here's a short description about it:

In 1912, the antiquarian book dealer Wilfrid M. Voynich bought a number of mediaeval manuscripts from an undisclosed location in Europe. Among these was a lavishly illustrated manuscript codex of 234 pages, written in an unknown script.
Voynich took the MS to the United States and started a campaign to have it deciphered. Now, almost 100 years later, the Voynich manuscript still stands as probably the most elusive puzzle in the world of cryptography. Not a single word of this 'Most Mysterious Manuscript', written probably in the second half of the 15th Century, can be understood.

Now...What are your thoughts?

Seems like I might have heard about this, but it has been a very long time ago.. That is quite mysterious. Where is this book at now? Is it in a museum? There are so many good code breakers, you would think they would figure something out. Unless it's just some kind of gibberish piece of artwork?

It is supposedly at Yale University, It's also claimed to be the Worlds most elaborate hoax. I feel if it is a hoax, it should be able to be deciphered, unless it's just total nothingness. A 500 year old hoax?

Well, people are generally the same as they were thousands of years ago. There has always been pranksters,.. but it is quite intresting that it seems to have so much artwork of universal things.. like plant life, and even the galaxy.. I would love to see more photos, I looked it up yesterday, and I wonder if it really is a hoax. Someone took a lot of time constructing it.

I too am leaning towards hoaxes, but like you mentioned, the galaxies. The telescope was invented about 1590, I'm not good with the 15th centurt/1500's but am thinking 1590 must have been the 16th century. So the manuscript therefore was written before the telescope was invented. How many galaxies are naked eye visible? That kind of throws a monkey wrench into the hoax idea in my book.

I agree, and yeah, 1590 would be considered the 16th century. I know the ancient egyptians were very intellegent about the solar system. But, I don't know if they could have created something like that.

What about the dyes that were used to write the book? Sometimes they can find out interesting information from that. What about something like Atlantis? When was it believed to exist? I believe Plato was the one who originally brought it up, but when did he live? Could it be possible that it was from there?

I never thought of things like dyes, I was more into the dates, Let me check on that...as well as Atlantis, both good thoughts.

Just checked...Atlantis was first mentioned, as you mentioned...by Plato, refering to the date 9500 BC

I've been going through ALL of the Astronomy Picture Of The Day archives, The manuscript is mentioned there as well, not as a hoax.
