Spy Satellite
What do you all think of the spy satellite being shot down...and their given reason for shooting it down? I think it's cool that they did it effectively, but I'm not convinced they shot it down because the fuel cells would be a danger to humans.
I'm thinking the reason it was shot down was something similar to the movie "The Andromeda Strain"
Any thoughts?

Re: Spy Satellite
I've never seen the movie you mentioned.. but I did do a little bit of searching on this.. and this seems to be a very controversial subject.. lots of mixed thoughts on the matter..
Here's a post that someone wrote on another site:
quote: The US said last week that it would use a missile to destroy the satellite, to stop it from crash landing. Officials say the satellite contains hazardous fuel which could kill humans. But Russia’s defence ministry said the US planned to test its “anti-missile defence system’s capability to destroy other countries' satellites”.
The US says the satellite lost power and communications shortly after it was launched in December 2006 and is now uncontrollable. “The decision to destroy the American satellite does not look harmless as they try to claim” - Russian defence ministry statement
It says the satellite is carrying more than 1,000lb (454kg) of hydrazine fuel in a tank which would survive re-entry, and the substance could be released as a toxic gas if the satellite crash landed. The Pentagon said on Saturday that the window for the operation would begin on Wednesday, when the space shuttle Atlantis ended its current mission.
But Russia’s defence ministry said the US had not given enough information on the reasons for the decision. “Speculations about the danger of the satellite hide preparations for the classical testing of an anti-satellite weapon," a statement reported by Itar-Tass news agency said.

Re: Spy Satellite
I too was thinking on my drive home tonight, What if it wasn't really ours to destroy? How would we ever know? Then you post that article, which backed up my thinking. I do think there is more to it than we now...or will ever know. Great hunting to find that...Kudo's to you.
F.Y.I.
The Andromeda Strain was a 70's Sci-Fi movie about a satellite that returned to earth, crashing in a small southwestern town. Killing everyone but 2 people. One was a baby, the other a wino. Turned out the satellite picked up some deep space virus that was very deadly.
It was taken to an underground lab ( they had them back then too ) and it was discovered the wino and baby both had acidic blood, I guess from crying and the other from drinking that saved them.
That's the short version...but a cool movie, rent it some time.

Re: Spy Satellite
Movie sounds pretty interesting.. I'll have to see if I can find it..
I personally think that this would not have been told to the general public.. but that they feared it would leak out or that debris would be found on earth.. this really seems more like some kind of "test experiment" to me.

Re: Spy Satellite
It may be that...see how accurate the weapons really are. It may be too that they spilled the beans on this because it was so close to Earth, and there had to be a few amateurs out there watching it, and they would freak if they were watching...all of a sudden it blew to bits. Think how that would sound when it hit the media.

Re: Spy Satellite
Coast to Coast update...today was the Anniversary of "The Battle Of L.A." They even had an old CBS newscast about it. I really want to find that on the web.
