Lost Parrot
This is a cute little story that I saw on Yahoo this morning.. I wanted to share it with you cause I thought it was pretty clever..
quote: TOKYO - When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught — recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help.
Police rescued the African grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor's roof in the city of Nagareyama, near Tokyo. After spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman Shinjiro Uemura said.
He kept mum with the cops, but began chatting after a few days with the vet.
"I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura," the bird told the veterinarian, according to Uemura. The parrot also provided his full home address, down to the street number, and even entertained the hospital staff by singing songs.
"We checked the address, and what do you know, a Nakamura family really lived there. So we told them we've found Yosuke," Uemura said.
The Nakamura family told police they had been teaching the bird its name and address for about two years.
But Yosuke apparently wasn't keen on opening up to police officials.
"I tried to be friendly and talked to him, but he completely ignored me," Uemura said.

It's always good to hear a happy ending..

Re: Lost Parrot
The whole story was great. I still have a tough time believing that parrots outlive their owners, that too is cool. Maybe not so cool for the Parrot, they need to remember new addresses more often.

Re: Lost Parrot
Wow! That must have been a smart bird! I wonder how hard it is to teach a bird to learn his name or anything like that... I mean there are stories and stuff all the time about birds and other animals learning that, so it can't be that hard, or their trainers and very commited to teaching them.

Re: Lost Parrot
Way more committed than I am. Fred is proof of that.
But you had a good question, how hard are they to train?? I've got no clue ( For once ) but I think I may check that one out.
Good to see you posting again...a new thought/opinion is always welcome.

Re: Lost Parrot
My father-n-law had a bird that he had trained to sit on his shoulder, he was also taught to simulate police sirens.. hehehe.. he'd even drink from a coffee cup. I don't think he ever got him to speak though, but he'd mess with him a little bit every night, talking to him.
Animals in general really do need alot of repetitive attention, and patience to be trained. I've finally got Jack to roll over on command.. and that's only cause he thinks he's getting a treat.. but hey.. it's a start.. (very stubborn dog..) But he does step into his harness.. which is pretty cute, I think that is mostly from habit of having his foot lifted up to go in.. he's learned to raise it up.

Re: Lost Parrot
Fred rolls over a lot...Mostly in the yard if he finds a spot where he once peed, Strange dog huh? They are supposed to be one of the smartest dogs, but also one of the most stubborn. I read something once where it's tough training them because you may want to train them to sit...they might want to learn how to heal...and they won't deviate. With Fred, that is very true.

It would probably be easier to train a dog, or any animal, when they're little. But I don't know... What kind of dog do you have?
