how do you handle the perfume problem?

When I go to my doctor's office there's a sign up telling people that he and his staff are both allergic to perfume so please don't wear it when coming for appointments. He also has an article posted which explains what a serious pollutant perfume is, or can be.

That's not the only place where I've seen signs up asking people not to wear perfume.

Frankly, I don't know how to handle it. I'm used to putting on one little shot of perfume (held at a distance of at least 10 - 12 inches) after I get dressed, if I'm going somewhere. People rarely compliment or mention my perfume and I think that's because it is usually faded to almost nothing by the time anyone is nearby. (It's a lonely life, what can I tell ya?)

But other times some woman will pass me and I think "Wow! That perfume is heavenly! I'd like to know what that is so I can buy it!"

So it seems to me its a bit of a two way street. I don't want to make things uncomfortable for people with allergies, and some sources say that some of the stuff that goes into perfume is pretty toxic, but I also think it would be something of a loss if people stopped using perfume altogether.

Any opinions on this? emoticon

Oh boy do I ever have an opinion on this subject! Good topic! Thanks for opening it up for discussion Starz!

I am sensitive to perfume. Probably not allergic since I don't break out in hives but I find it very hard to breathe around some scents. I have to leave the vicinity of the scent and get some clean air or I'll end up gasping for breath.

I think most people go too far with it and it is sometimes overpowering. But even the slightest poof that someone puts on, if it has that chemical in it that I'm sensitive to I will still have a hard time breathing around it.

Now, not all scents do this to me so I am assuming there is some added chemical or essential oil that I react to. My husband uses AXE body wash in the shower and I actually like the smell of that and have no problems with it. I use body wash too, mostly Avon and none of them cause me to have problems.

But when I'm out in public I run into problems. Someone passes me in a grocery store and I almost gag. Or I go to a meeting and have to make an excuse why I won't sit near a certain person or persons and move to another seat.

I can understand the doctor's office posting that sign. I would find it stifling to be stuck in a small cubicle with a person bathed in some obnoxious (to me) smell and not be able to leave the room. How could I give good care to someone in that situation when all I'm thinking about is getting out of there?

On a personal note, my husband and I have a standing breakfast on Wednesday mornings with a group of about 20 people. There is one woman there who wears some God-awful scent that is surely 30 years old and has turned. It is so bad that I have now gone out of my way to make sure I am nowhere near where she will be. And I've told my husband that if I am ever stuck next to her that I will try to tell her, in as nice a way as possible, that her perfume bothers me.

When I was younger, I used to wear perfume and I'm probably receiving a lot of bad Karma from the times I did. I apologize to the Universe and to all the people that had to endure my floral, musky, or spicy scents. Hopefully my Karma is coming to an end!

What one person thinks smells divine, to another can smell like spoiled milk.

A clean body smells sweet enough! emoticon

You asked..... emoticon

Yeah, me too.

Health-wise, I have no problem with perfume and I like smelling some on others but I don't like the overboard ones. Alas, it might have been me in the excessive 80s.

What I can't stand to smell is cigarettes on people, gags me to high heavens. And once again I feel the need to apologize to the near earth as I used to smoke ALL the time. I quit in 2002. emoticon

Welcome oMission! Nice to meet you!

Congratulations on quitting smoking, I'm sure it wasn't an easy thing to do. I used to smoke too but quit back in 1982 when I met my DH and he was a non-smoker. I think it's hardest to quit when other people around you are still smoking, especially if it's your brand. That's why I quit and started again at least 10 times. Finally it took!

How did you quit? Did you use a patch or anything else? Or just go cold turkey? That's what I did but since I smoked menthols I used to keep a Hall's Mentholyptus in my mouth all the time to breathe in the menthol. It did get me through the hard times.

What a topic. I do wear perfume, but I don't wear very much. I have to be careful myself as there are some scents that bother me too. I think what bothers me more than perfume though, is the smell of fresh cigarette smoke on someone. Especially if you are in a nonsmoking facility, they go outside to smoke then come back in. It's almost overwhelming at times.

Yep cigarette smoke is another thing that bothers me. Not fresh smoke though, its the smell that is in someone's car or house and on their breath (oh God that has to be the worst smell of all!). Imagine someone who wears too much perfume and also smokes! Egad!

Thanks for the replies. This has made me rethink my attitude towards perfume.

One problem is the substance that causes a reaction is likely to be different for different people, so regardless of whether the ingredients are natural or synthetic, there probably IS no safe perfume.

I wonder if anyone has done research to figure out which substances cause allergic or other reactions, and which ones seem to be very benign?

I think I will stop using perfume after hearing your description of how it feels to suffer a reaction.

Just out of curiousity, do any of you with perfume reactions have any flower or plant allergies that you know of?

I am gluten-intolerant and allergic to wheat, but that's it. I don't have any allergies that I know of and really not sure what it is in perfume or cologne that causes me problems. I'd be curious to know what it is that causes the problem too but even if you knew, how would you ever avoid it? Do perfume bottles and cologne bottles have ingredients labels? I have never noticed.
