Literature & Film Reviews/Critical Commentary

Hey Guys,
Why not use this thread to post critical commentary on the books you read and films you watch (or television plays)? This could help you in both some of the assignments you need to write (e.g. for 'Writer & Reader') and help you in developing some of your other work.

I should warn you Fitz (yes, I know who you are, but that's your user name, so...) that I tried to set up a similar thread on the Prose forum. It didn't quite work out as planned...

Don't be sneaking any education in here, we won't stand for it.

Don't worry - we learned our lesson after trying to sneak education into our classes.

More subtlety required, you need to wrap the information in cake.

I went to see the Tony Scott film Domino, and thought it had some cracking lines and very funny scenes. Although somebody did assure me that this was probably not intended in the writing but none the less... If that is the case then I think this is what Paul Lewis would call ironic viewing. emoticon

"They changed the effing font. They changed the effing font" Christopher Walken.

"Please. *boy begging for his life* I just supplied the pu$$y."

[upon first meeting Domino]
Ed: Why would a delicate little thing like you wanna be a bounty hunter?
Domino Harvey: I wanna have a little fun.

Sorority Girl: What's it like to have the body of a ten-year-old boy?
Domino Harvey: [off look] Have you had a nose job?
Sorority Girl: No.
[Domino sucker-punches her in the face]

There were some obvious flaws in the plot... for instance we suddenly go from the young girl in a church, to sitting by the pool playing with nun-chucks - bit of a leap!! How did she get into weapons? Obviously I like it for the violence, the feminist in me is proud that women can kick ass with the boys, one of the explicit messages being I'm sure the numbing of todays society to violence... hmmm that sounds like me!! emoticon There's also the message about television media and the extent they will go to create an interesting show, exploitation of others. Hence the cameo's by no less than 2 Beverley Hills 90210'ers and Jerry Springer. But if you like violence and want a laugh with something that looks good visually, go see.

Nice use of discourse there, NovelNymph.

Love the promo art for this movie, btw:

Michey Rourke kicks all kinds of bottom: he's a vastly underused actor, I think. He was great in Walter Hill's JOHNNY HANDSOME and astoundingly good in Michael Cimino's THE YEAR OF THE DRAGON, a movie scripted by Oliver Stone which received an enormous critical drubbing upon its initial release.

I would question the casting of Keira Knightley though, but any film with both Chris Walken and a cameo appearance by TOM WAITS gets brownie points from me.

However, I didn't like Scott's MAN ON FIRE too much, though: in that movie he demonstrated a tendency to deploy some extremely distracting (and not to say inordinately flashy) editing techniques that detracted from the development of the narrative (and gave me a bloomin' headache too).
