Well, apart from the contemporary 'biggies' (Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Frank Miller), I've been enjoying the GOTHAM CENTRAL series recently, and the independently-published THE WALKING DEAD has been floating my boat. I also recently enjoyed Mark Millar's SUPERMAN: RED SON, in which the Man of Steel is reimagined as a Soviet hero: I'm not a big Superman fan, but I really enjoyed this book for its subversion of the worldview of the Superman comic books.

Superhero comics are a bit hit-and-miss with me. I love the DareDevil comics, though (although I'm in two minds about the recent movie); and I've been following The Punisher since the Steven Grant series of the 1980s, which blew my mind!

I take it you've read Ennis' reworking of Nick Fury, also published in the Marvel Max series?

I buy Superman, but to be honest I'm not a big fan, although I'm looking forward to seeing what Singer (X-men 1 & 2) does with the new movie...

Not really read Nick Fury... although I do like Ennis & Palmiotti's work...

Talking about Mark Millar, he wrote and drew a 6 issue miniseries through Top Cow called Wanted... heard of it/read it? Really good, brutal story that tears into modern-day society... recommend.

While we're on the recommendation couch, have you read any of Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man? It's been running a couple of years & I love it. The rights were recently snapped up for a 2006/2007 release movie, which would be awesome. Nobody I know who reads comics knows of this title, including CHRIS! of all people. Please tell me you read it...

By the way, do you know who you're talking to here... emoticon

Seeing as how I like Mark Millar's work, and you recommend it, I'll treat myself to Red Son... cheers

This should be an interesting film, I reckon. I still have a fondness for SUPERMAN 2, though, in part due to Terence Stamp's performance: the film's a bit of a mess, I admit, and this is due to its checkered production history, but it's quite entertaining.

The TPB of Ennis' FURY is well-worth picking up, imo. It's very darkly comic, and wonderfully OTT in places.

I like Mark Millar's work, and I think that despite not being a big Superman fan (as I also am not), you'll enjoy the way in which the Superman story is given a new 'spin' in Millar's RED SON.

I haven't, sadly; but I'll see if I can find it: I'm always on the look-out for new comics.

Yep. I know who everyone on here is emoticon

NP:

I'm rereading James Baldwin's THE DEVIL FINDS WORK, a collection of brilliant critical essays on Hollywood cinema. 'Tis a great book, and it's highly recommended (by me, of course).

Okay, I'll pick up the TPB of Fury and let you know what I think. The TPBs of Y: The Last Man go for about a fiver each on e-bay, and I think it's up to about issue 6 now, all a couple hundred pages long, so you've got some catching up to if you intend to read it.

I have a fondness for both Superman I & II... I remember my mother taking me to see Superman III and loving that, too... what the hell was I thinking... mind you, I was a wee teen.

But I agree, old Terence always stamps ( emoticon ) authority on the films he's in, although I'm not so sure about The Limey...

By the way, you didn't say whether you'd read Millar's WANTED... I'll assume you haven't...

...and clearly you like Batman, yes?

Who doesn't indeed... and those that don't, should...

Have you read HUSH, written by Jeph Loeb with artwork by the GREAT Jim Lee?

If you haven't, you should... one of the greatest Batman stories of the last five years...

I'm reading The Long Firm, which is a gangster novel, not my usual perusal but I'm enjoying it.

I've just finished Breakfast of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut (sp) - which was brilliant.
