I'm reading a book that a friend got me for my birthday.

Disobediance by Naomi Alderman

Very interesting book. Orthodox Jewish customs are fascinating. Wouldn't catch me converting to Judaism though. Can you imagine... having to let the man be in charge!

Pah. What a load of tosh.

It would be the idea of circumcision that would put me off.

Oh, and

J. G. Ballard: KINGDOM COME

I found MILLENNIUM PEOPLE to be slightly disappointing, but KINGDOM COME is shaping up to be a much more fascinating book.

Mainly books for college.

Women and Radio - Caroline Mitchell

Woman's hour - From Joyce Grenfell to Sharon Osbourne: Celebrating 60 Years of Woman's Hour.

The Woman's hour book is particularly fascinating as the interviews in the book start in the 40's. The difference in topic, manner and people from then to now is interesting. This may have inspired a new idea for my FMP. I'll just keep researching this area until I can discuss my ideas with Laurie next week.

Unless you're doing Comedy or a classic adaptation then it's not that easy to find quality radio plays anyway.

I have a first edition book - Woman's Hour - from 1953. It's incredibly fascinating.

WAITING FOR GODOT (Samuel Beckett) - It's on my MA reading list for scriptwriting. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm so pleased I've read it - superb.

When I was studying for my first degree, I had to adapt WAITING FOR GODOT for two performers (which meant reworking the Lucky and Pozzo portion of the play so that the content of Luck and Pozzo's dialogue was delivered in other ways), direct it and perform as Estragon. (We also put on Howard Brenton's HESS IS DEAD.) Those were good times. I love Beckett's work.

Chris Voglers writers Journey. A very good read that opens up a great way of looking at stories especially when you can then compare it to Propp and see where the similarities and differences are.

I read Vogler's book some time during the 1990s, and found it to be heavily derivative of Joseph Campbell's THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES, published in 1949: Vogler seemed content to take Campbell's ideas and simply apply them to new examples.

Rather than critically engaging with Campbell's ideas, Vogler simply seems happy to use them as a reductive 'formula'. Where Campbell was a fiercely intelligent cultural critic, Vogler always struck me as little more than a moneyman who was simply looking for a 'formula' for success, and decided to take his cue from someone else's work. Have you read Campbell's book, Dan? I have a feeling that you would like it. Where Vogler suggests that the 'monomyth' must be adhered to, Campbell stresses the idea that every society should be continuously in the process of creating new myths rather than relying on existing narratives.
