Re: Final Major Project
He said that he didn't want my third year to be nothing but annoying re-writes. I see his point, but I want something to sell at the end.

Re: Final Major Project
Surely it's not about what he wants but rather what you want? Or is that me being silly?
I know I'd rather be as advanced as you and then just have a whole year to address the problems which would have probably been there even if I had written it within the final year.
I suppose he thinks that you might have changed your mind and done something else instead but I know your mind Al and once you get an idea you can't be swayed.

Re: Final Major Project
I assume that the culmination of the course was designed to be a celebration of the students' creative endevours. A chance to show off what we have learned from all three years of the course. Me turning up with a first draft is perhaps not 'what it's all about' as far as the course is concerned.
I do think that my first draft is a show-piece of what I've learned in the first two years and my re-drafts will incorporate what I learn in the third year. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re: Final Major Project
Done it!
60,000 words and it's not even September.
That was...
I can't think of a word to describe what that was. Special is as good as any I suppose.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Now the hard works starts
Actually, I enjoy the rewriting process as this is where you actually shape your craft, and watching your work getting better and better gives you immense satisfaction.
What have you written, anyway? Is it a novel?

Re: Final Major Project
It's not finished yet; I reckon 80-90k should see it done. I want to finish it before doing the re-writes but I'm itching to go back and tinker with it. Forget tinker, I want to rip it to bits. Off the top of my head I can think of three places where I've contradicted myself, so I assume there's at least a dozenoccasions.
It's a novel. I'm trying for sci-fi rom-com, actually a rom-com sci-fi. Anyway, I'm trying and it's very trying!

Re: Final Major Project
I can't actually recall, off the top of my head, any sf/rom coms... do any exist? If so, which ones have you 'taken inspiration' from?
What's the premise? ... Okay, bad question; you may not want to post that on a public forum...

Re: Final Major Project
I'm aiming for Kurt Vonnegut (when you're pissing in the wind you may as well aim high).
As for premise: boy meets girl with a backdrop of an oppurtunistic alien invasion. And dog; lots and lots of dogs.

Re: Final Major Project
Vonnegut is an excellent target to aim at. I'm impressed.
As for aiming high, I always say aim as high as you can; you may not reach that high, but you'll reach higher than you would if you aimed for a more 'attainable' goal. And that's worth the struggle in my book
I like the premise, and I'm very, very intrigued about all the dogs...

Re: Final Major Project
Well, you never know...
I'm giving myself a year to finish it and re-write it. I want to get that 80-90k down to 60-70k, and the re-writes will hopefully do it. Plus there's an FMP in there too.
