Damned impressed

I've just decided to change the name of my lead character. I'm 62,000 words in and it was gonna be a lot of drecging through to find every use of the original name.

Control H. 'Find and Replace'. It found 905 uses and changed them all just like that. All bow down to the great god Word.

No, no it's not. I changed the name from Tom to James and I've just noticed words like sJamesach, botJames. God knows how many more there'll be.

I honestly don't get on with Microsoft Word. I use NeoOffice, which is free and in my book more user-friendly. Did I mention that it's free too?

It's free, you know.

Free=Good.

Exactly what I was driving at emoticon

There's probably a jamesorrow (tomorrow) etc.

When you did it, did you put spaces at each end of the word to be changed, like " Tom " instead of "Tom"? And did you make it character specific, such as capital T?

Anyway, no problem, you being the clever guy that you are, you would have made a backup before you carried out the changes, didn't you? emoticon

Sounds good, but it's Mac OS and I'm Windows Vista... never mind emoticon

I love MS Word, but that's maybe because I've never used any other word processing software. It is notoriously user-unfriendly, but that's of course relative to what you want to get out of it.

I've looked at the NeoOffice homepage and it does look good.

NeoOffice is in fact based on a open source PC word processor called OpenOffice: http://www.openoffice.org/ emoticon

Re: Damned impressed

openoffice... it's pretty much microsoft office without the bells and whistles and extortionate price... which I've never paid, by the way emoticon

If I weren't so used to MS Word and PowerPoint, I'd think about changing, but for those who haven't got MS Office, or don't want to pay the Microsoft price, go get openoffice, it's great.

Thanks Fitz emoticon
