Stress Relief

As we're all under stress, let's share our tips for handling it.

I'm a devil for eating and watching low-budget late 1980s/early 1990s action films. (If they're sci-fi/action hybrids such as Albert Pyun's CYBORG or OMEGA DOOM, all the better.) Call it 'comfort viewing' emoticon

So if you ever see me wandering the corridors, eating and mumbling about watching DOUBLE IMPACT or HARD TO KILL, you know that I'm under a lot of pressure emoticon

Re: Stress Relief

I find stress aids me in getting things done, but I do find sometimes that it dulls my mood. I don't notice it much myself, but the people around me do, especially the missus.

I find it helps to set myself rewards for reaching a goal. If I force myself to write for so long, I'll reward myself with something nice to eat, usually cake of somekind - I have a sweet tooth. If there's a film I really want to see then I'll use that as a reward, refusing myself the luxury of sitting down and watching it until I've completed whatever my task is that day, week, or even month. If I'm writing an essay, for instance, I won't watch a film until I've completed it. Usually this means I have a pile of DVD's waiting for me when I'm done. If everything really does get too much for me then I'll just tear myself away from the stress, plonk myself down in front of the TV, and flick through the movie channels, settling on the first thing that sparks my interest. Sometimes you just have to step outside of what you're doing and forget about it for a while, recharge your batteries. Films do that for me.

When I'm writing I listen to my music. I find silence extremely stressful, almost at a phobic level.

I'm busy all the time so I reward myself at the end of each week for getting through the seven days and completing everything I have to do. That reward is a nice round of golf, which ironically, if anybody has ever played the game, can prove more stressful than anything you've ever encountered... emoticon It takes my mind away from everything for a few hours, because to play golf well you have to focus on nothing else but the shot you're trying to play at that moment. I think of it as a kind of meditation, a time when I empty my mind of everything that is cluttering it. Of course, I have to fill it back up with that clutter when the game is over, but I'm always renewed with a fresh sense of purpose, a new energy.

Okay, I'm rambling now, so I'll go emoticon
