Re: Track Your Film Viewing, 2007
I just want to cry when I see Serenity. A ninety minute (excellent) film or 22 40 minute episodes of (excellent) TV. Boo-hoo.

I'm with you. Serenity (the movie) is full of emotion born out of the philosophical truisms of the characters, all encased in a shell of sarcastic wit. How brilliant is Joss Whedon? I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with Wonder Woman.
I've not seen any of the Firefly TV episodes. I think I'm going to buy them. Boo-hoo.

Re: Track Your Film Viewing, 2007
Buy Firefly! 14 episodes of pure joy marred only by the realisation at the end of every episode that you're one step closer to the end.
Joss Whedon may be my hero; either him or Bogarde.

THE BLACH DAHLiIA - Take away the fabulous looks and homage to every black and white detective film of the 40's & 50's, and all that remains is an overcomplecated plot that is not the truth because nobody knows what really happened. Great acting, though.
I'm torn about this picture, because I really love James Ellroy's work (in fact, he's my favourite living American author) but at the same time I think Brian De Palma is, aside from a handful of very good pictures (BLOW OUT, THE FURY, BODY DOUBLE, CASUALTIES OF WAR, THE UNTOUCHABLES, SCARFACE) one of the most hideously overpraised American filmmakers: he's utterly postmodern, in that he steals imagery and ideas left, right and centre. Sometimes this technique works, but more often than not it backfires: see MISSION TO MARS, DRESSED TO KILL and SNAKE EYES for examples of De Palma at his worst. Even Michael Caine's presence can't salvage DRESSED TO KILL.
Hence, I'm going to stick with Ellroy's book and avoid the De Palma film, at least until it turns up on television.
SERENITY was a marvel; it was an entirely successful exercise. The score is fantastic too.

I'm totally in agreement about De Palma, especially after watching Dahlia. I've always been a massive fan of both The Untouchables and, of course, the great Scarface, but that's about it from his works. As you've already said, Snake Eyes was a real low.

I would never wish to discourage people from watching a film; indeed, I believe people should watch films regardless of what they've heard, even in spite of what they've heard, in order for them to make up their own minds. Maybe you'll watch Dahlia and think it's amazing... maybe

HIDDEN (Michael Haneke) - If you haven't seen this film, you should. Beautiful and ambiguous (it took me some time to understand it), I highly recommend it.

Re: Track Your Film Viewing, 2007
My Casino Royale DVD arrived today, from Hong Kong. Ducking marvelous stuff!
However, the documentaries in the 2-disc set are little more than the sort of promotional fluff that's becoming all to prominent on DVD releases of movies these days. If you're thinking of snagging the movie when it comes out on DVD in the UK, I'd recommend saving some money and getting the single disc release: you're not missing much.

Bruce Almighty. I should've listened to myself about Jim Carrey. I haven't seen a film as bad as this for a long time. Probably since someone at work forced me to watch Liar Liar.

My Super Ex-Grilfriend. Alright if you don't bother watching the last half hour.
Romance and Cigarettes. Lots of fun and just generally very good, well worth watching again in fact.
