Re: Dark Knight trailer
I'm still not sure about the casting of Heath Ledger. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN aside, he's done nothing to convince me that he's anything other than a prettyboy, and he certainly doesn't look pretty in THE DARK KNIGHT.
Crispin Glover would have been perfect for the role of The Joker. Choosing Ledger probably makes good business sense, as there will be queues of teenage girls around the block, but Glover would have been better for the part. (The footage of Ledger in the trailer doesn't make me tingle with joy either: the makeup strikes me as phenomenally similar to Brandon Lee's makeup in The Crow, only with more colour, and Ledger seems to be playing the character as some sort of self-pitying teenage whiner. I trust Nolan, but having seen the trailer I'm none too certain about THE DARK KNIGHT.)

I have to agree, as much as it hurts me to say. I'm a big Batman fan who's really looking forward to this movie, and like you I also trust Nolan (he's more than earned it), but from what I can see in the trailer Ledger is too reminiscent of Jack Nicholson: his voice, vocabulary and character mannerisms are all Nicholson's. I read somewhere recently that Ledger claimed he was injecting his Joker character with punk anarchy and a slice of Jack Nicholson's camp Joker from Burton's first Batman film - I think he's got too much Nicholson in there.

Re: Dark Knight trailer
Heath Ledger is no more, it seems.

This is a strange, and sad, surprise. There's a cynical part of me that thinks it's some sort of promotional stunt for DARK KNIGHT, but I'm afraid it isn't.
Is he destined to become the new generation's Jimmy Dean?

Re: Dark Knight trailer
That's a really sad surprise. It seems it was an overdose, which is not surprising as most Hollywood celebrity deaths are caused by drugs.

I think the drugs found in Ledger's flat were over-the-counter prescription pills, Mark. At least, that's what the US news is saying.
Brad Renfro died seven days ago too, didn't he?

Yes, he did, which also may be drug related. Then today we have images of Amy Winehouse allegedly smoking crack. What is it with the human condition that people have to take drugs? As somebody who's never taken illegal substances, it really annoys and frustrates me to see people throwing away their lives in this manner.

I was a bit shocked with those images on the front page of THE SUN too, Mark. It's one thing to discuss the topic, but another to show those pictures on the front page of a newspaper! To my mind, that's glamourising drug use; it's like saying to the kids, 'Look: the celebrities take drugs. It's all right, really'.
As a society, we're becoming very lackadaisical about drug use. Thanks to drugs (principally marijuana, which a lot of people seem to think is socially acceptable, and some hallucinogens), my cousin suffered a psychotic break and was sectioned as a paranoid schizophrenic. It frustrates me that a lot of young people (and a lot of middle-aged people, who should know better) don't seem to understand the dangers and the potentially long-term behavioural/psychological effects of drugs like marijuana, which seems to be everywhere nowadays--and nobody bats an eyelid.
Anyway, I digress...

Nobody can say that young people take drugs because of a lack of education, it has to be simply pure ignorance.
I knew somebody who was a chef on the ferries out of Hull to Amsterdam, a decent paid job that included a urine test every three months or so. He failed the test because he'd smoked marijuana, was sacked, and then a few months later managed to get a job as a customs officer on Immingham docks... how the hell does that happen?
Anyway, I also digress

Re: Dark Knight trailer
Apparently Heath Ledger was in the middle of filming Terry Gilliam's new film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus... Gilliam doesn't seem to have a lot of good fortune on his shoots, does he?
