He doesn't. But FISHER KING, JABBERWOCKY and BRAZIL aside, I must admit that I'm not a huge fan of Mr Gilliam. His films are a little bit too postmodern and arch for my tastes.
I've also had to read too many students' auteur studies on Gilliam over the years, when I used to teach the second year of the A Level Film Studies course, and I really don't think Gilliam is an auteur in the proper sense of the word: he's got a defined aesthetic, but nobody has yet convinced me that his films have a consistency of theme. That's not to denigrate his films: I just think he's a metteur-de-scene (a technical 'craftsman', if you like) rather than an auteur.

I generally agree. I liked TWELVE MONKEYS when I first saw it, but when you pick it apart it proves to be not that special. I love JABBERWOCKY and BRAZIL, but it pains me to admit that I have never got round to seeing the FISHER KING, a fact made even worse because Jeff Bridges is one of my favourite actors! FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS is another of his I have wanted to see but never got round to it. I enjoyed the novel, though. And the BROTHERS GRIMM... sorry, I'd better not say anything too damning in the current atmosphere of loss...
Gilliam is definitley no auteur. A technical craftsman? That's a start, although I feel that's underselling him just a tad.
