The Punisher: War Zone

Ray Stevenson is playing The Punisher; I must say that in terms of his look, he's a better choice for The Punisher than Tom Jane was.

Let's hope there's less of the previous film's 'Oh, no. My wife and child were killed. I'll just drink myself silly and mope around for a bit' emoticon And the young folk said that Spider-Man seemed a bit 'emo' (whatever that word means) in SPIDER-MAN 3 emoticon

Seriously, as a Punisher fan since the mid-1980s I think the Dolph Lundgren picture was pretty good, especially in its workprint form before it was hacked down by the studio. (But of course, at the time the fans complained that it wasn't a 'real' Punisher film because Lundgren didn't have the iconic skull on his t-shirt emoticon .)

Yes, I totally agree. Stevenson was one of the main stars in the BBC / HBO funded series, ROME - he played Titus Pullo, a hard-as-nails war-loving Roman soldier who had a gooey soft centre for the ladies emoticon

The Tom Jane punisher was Grit, excuse my french. But it was. It's been many many years since I've seen Lundgren's Punisher, and I've never actually seen the pre-studio cut of that film. I think moving away from the skull t-shirt in Lundgren's Punisher was a good thing to do; kind of gave it a maturer edge. Wasn't it an 18, anyway? I remember Lundgren having a bit of an Elvis thing going on with his hair in that film, and that he gets the Grit kicked out of him by a... woman! Lundgren's a pussy! emoticon

A direct adaptaion of the Punisher Max series would be awesome, but obviously the studios wouldn't allow that without cutting it for the teeny market.

It was indeed. Where Jonathan Hensleigh's PUNISHER was also an '18', but felt like a teenie flick with added grue, Dolph's PUNISHER movie had a real 1980s brutal action flick vibe, and there's none of the sentimental wishy-washy stuff that characterised the 2004 film. The film was quite heavily cut by the MPAA, as well: the unrated cut is much stronger. The film was directed by Mark Goldblatt, one of action cinema's most prolific editors.

The studio hacked out the film's fifteen-minute long prologue, which really harmed the film. It established the relationship between Lundgren and Louis Gossett Jr's character, which is integral to the film but is completely missing from the final edit of the picture; it also shows the death of Castle's wife, which in the final cut is depicted through a brief montage.

I've got an original Spanish poster for the Lundgren PUNISHER flick emoticon
