camping! The Good and the Bad!

Summer is here and camping is one of the top vacay choices of all time.

I thought it would be a fun topic to bs about.
Things you like, things you hate, maybe some good stories?

I didn't do a whole lot of camping as a kid, i lived out in the sticks, so going outside accomplished most of what camping was for lol. Just a few times at "away" church camp with cabins and such. In high school I started doing civil war reenactments and that was a fantastic, massive camping trip when the public had gone home. Lots of great memories there.

I gotta say, my favorite part of camping are the candid, and often hilarious discussions you can have with a group around a camp fire late into the wee hours. There's something very primal, and intimate about it.

The worst part is the horrible bedding that's not at all like home, and when you wake up a couple hours before dawn, FROZEN and nothing you can do seems to warm you up and it's nearly impossible to sleep. Also the pain following holding your bladder as long as you possibly can to avoid freezing even more.

Camping!

The Good:
- Spending quality time with family without everyday distractions like computers, TV, etc.
- Everything seems to taste better when roasted over a campfire.
- Getting real fresh air.

The Bad:
- Tenting in thunderstorms.
- Having to trudge through said thunderstorms to relieve oneself behind a tree at 3 a.m.
- Air leaking out of the air mattress so you find yourself waking up on the cold hard ground barely able to move.

The Ugly:
- Going to a swim in the lake without realizing how many leeches call it home.
- Forced to share air mattress with older and brother and getting rolled on, kicked, and shoved off onto the floor.
- Practical jokes with wet leaves in sleeping bags.

But, in all honesty, I love camping. The last time I went camping it was me, my brother, and my dad. We went all around the province of Nova Scotia for a couple weeks, even down to Yarmouth to visit some relatives. It was great. Lately though, my camping has been limited to setting up the tent in the backyard when a friend comes to stay the weekend.

EWWW on the leaches. I forgot all about the bugs and how bad I break out when I get mosquito bites.

I also forgot how full of win food seared with real fire is, and the sense of accomplishment involved with baking in a dutch oven over a camp fire emoticon

To Cook Leeches, By Nosphaer Allen.

Ingredients:
1 lb raw leeches, drained of excess blood.
1 bottle (750 mL) fine aged red wine.
1 cup pureed roasted red peppers.
6 cubes steak bouillon.
2 cups all purpose cooking flour.
1 gallon frying oil (use peanut or canola oils)
———————————————————————————————————————————————
Instructions
WARNING: do NOT use bait leeches
If your leeches are fresh then pour them directly into a medium bowl. Pour in your red wine, red peppers, and steak bouillon. Stir these ingredients together thoroughly. Cover, then allow to marinade in you refrigerator for at least 3 days. Once saturated in the marinade, drain the excess, set aside. In a shallow dish sift your flour. Dredge the leeches in the flour, shaking off excess. Fry the leeches until golden brown and delicious.

Reccomendations: Pair with a light citrus salad, or perhaps serve as an hors 'doeurve alongside ****tail shrimp.

High in protein and low in fat, for fried food standards.

I have known campers that rent U-haul trailers and trucks to move their entire household to the campsite. I have yet to meet any sort of camper anywhere who brings:

Haha! You're forgetting the gallon of frying oil!

Man, we'd just pack up our little family sedan and hit the road. xD

I must admit dusky your right, but in all seriousness, bouillon broth cubes have been given to armed forces on lengthy missions because of their simplicity and practical sense. a pot of hot water and three bouillon cubes and eureka! Broth that can be used to make many of the simplest dishes. As for the peppers, my dad always brings them on a camping trip for those good ol' kebabs. With the first ingredient i must say, it is too true that only a chump would bring such a thing on a camping trip. (wut yeh nead iz BEHR!)

Most reenactors bring meat, chips, soda, beer, and fishing gear location permitting. Then their wives go set up the cook tent in civillian camp where they have everything.

Everything that is except wine and boullion cubes.

Chances are though, she planned to make something impressive for a high tea you can sneak off with. Everyone knows lemon poppyseed poundcake goes well with beans, hardtack and salt horse. (salt horse in fact being the rib eyes those poor starving confeds are grilling.)
