Re: Show Us Your Sets
I opened my Tobacco Sunburst XP8s for the first time this last week. Yep. First time the heads were removed since new in 1980. The smell was amazing--different than the swivo series, which have a kind of musty smell, kind of like old library books. The XP8s, rather, have a clean maple wood scent. Very interesting. Quite lovely, actually. There was barely even any light dust inside... except I found a petrified ladybug in the floor tom.
The reason for opening these up after nearly 30 years was to install new heads. I had tried out the Aquarian Super 2 heads on another drum set, and was very pleased with the sound, so I've been anxious to get them onto the XP8s. As you know, Roy Burns of Aquarian recommends the Super 2 batter heads and Classic Clears for the resos. On the bass he suggests the Super Kick 1. These are what I ended up getting, and they are truly phenomenal.
While cleaning and inspecting the shells, I was most impressed with the definitive, clean, sharp and smooth bearing edges. The new heads fit perfectly, and tuning was very easy and precise. Also, the love and care by the American Rogers hand craftsmen is evident in both the interior and exterior finishes.
I gigged the drums last night-- first time I've played them in about a year. Once again, I have to exclaim how blown away I am by the sound of Rogers XP8s. You other XP8 owners know what I'm talking about. Although I also love my Swivos, the XP8s are just freaking phenomenal, in a "modern" sort of way.
So, I have to say, I love finding excuses to do long fills over all these tom toms!
(Note: those are NOT cracks you see in these pics. It is merely an effect of the light from the flash.)
Hey...Ya gotta eat!

Since there was no patina on the interior fasteners, I didn't need to worry about wiping anything off for historic purposes. So, I wiped down the shells inside and out first with a wet towel, and dried them. Then, I used Acryliclean to remove bits of masking tape residue from the 1980s when the heads were damped, as the set was primarily used in my long-parted-out recording studio back then. Acryliclean is a mild solvent that does not harm lacquer finishes the way acetone or lacquer thinner would.
Next, I polished the chrome and thumb screws with Blue Magic. Finally, I polished the shells both inside and outside with Zymol wax. Both Zymol and Acryliclean are car care products, and they lend themselves very well to lacquer finishes.

Sorry, Jack. Opening and cleaning these was just too magical to pass up taking pictures and sharing. It was an "Oobe:" An "Out-of-Box Experience." Kind of a guy thing.

Re: Show Us Your Sets
You know....... if you had bottled that "Virgin Drum Interior Scent" and sold it on ebay, you would be rich right now.

Re: Show Us Your Sets
Ploughman, I remember you telling me how lucky I was to be able to look forward to the moment that I lifted the heads and took a whiff. It was everything you said it would be.
