Early Cleveland Powertone w/Custom Tobacco Finish

Got this from Rogersoholic last year and finally got around to restoring it. It's unknown as to who refinished the drum, but it's obvious that a lot of care was put into it.

This is an early three ply drum with the wrap removed and outer ply finished in tobacco sunburst.

The owner carefully wrapped the lug springs in felt. He also isolated the lugs from the shell with felt, much like the factory started doing in the 80s. Also, he added chrome plated lug locks--again similar to what the factory started doing in 1982.

Finally, note the addition of the Gretsch die cast upper hoop.

What does the drum sound like? Well, it's a Powertone, so what can I say, it's awesome. Compared to my blue sparkle Powertone (which has been my go-to drum as of late) it is drier and has a less hollow, less "ringy" sound to it. I've started using this drum with the XP8 Londoner 7, and the pairing is wonderful.

Tommy,
My hat is off to the master of restoration. What a beautiful drum and a great clean up job. After seeing all of the sunburts and tobaccos I am a convert and will be looking for
one of these sets.

Thanks, TRod. Tobacco sunburst is lovely, though the finish is unforgivably delicate. Just moving the drums around it's easy to ding them. Consequently, most examples of them are pretty pockmarked. But if you find a good set, snatch it--especially the XP8s. The build quality is overwhelmingly excellent, and the sound is to die for.
