Check out this archived article he wrote and see page 24 of the original article or page 3 of this file. It is an excellent read about wood Dyna Sonic snares and the rarity of various finishes.

Wood Dyna Sonic Article by Steve Maxwell

Mike, I have read this article before, and, once again, I'm extremely surprised that an expert such as Steve Maxwell would not include the 1982 and 1983 XP10 wood Dynas. These are arguably rarer than any of the 60s models, with the notable exception of the Wildwood and maybe the Mardi Gras Dynas. I am no expert on the early drums, but with the stumbling ad-hoc research I've been doing, the 82/83 models have fallen under the radar, as have the XP8 series of shells in general, especially the wood skinned models. The vintage world is still fixated on Script badged Roger drums. The Rogers book even glosses over the XP8 series during its five year run before the collapse of the company.

The XP10 wood Dynas were only available for two years.
Ploughman, Longroll and Jack are pretty savvy about the XP10s, and it would be interesting to read their opinions.

Tommy,
Don't forget to ask Powertone too. I am sure that if they don't have one, they know who does.

Powertone, O Powertone, wherefore art thou O Powertone?

Do you know of any other Wildwood and Mardi Gras Dynas?

How about XP10 Dynas in each of the three sizes?

Okay, maybe this is a stretch, but Longroll, does your dating guide show a list of wood Dynas?

Re: Show Us Your Snares!

I'm sorry to say that the wood Dynasonic snare drums that are sought after, are mostly the oval badge ones.

I could take a oval badge COB Dynasonic and move all the parts onto a Keller wood shell and have a Big R XP style Dynasonic, something I've done many times. Great sounding drums, by the way.

The XP Big R Dynasonic snare drums just don't have the desire that oval badge Dynasonic snare drums have, and I have not kept track of them. Granted, I would like to have one in my collection, but have not pursued that path.

Tommy,
I think those 82/83 snares probably don't get the attention of the earlier dyna sonics because they come from an era when Rogers was on the decline from the their glory days.

On a more personal level, to me, I really have a fixation on the 1960-1965 period because it is the history and the time period when Rogers became the premier drum company. I also think that for me it is my childhood time, with early Motown and early rock n roll - whereas the early 80's just doesn't connect with me as such.

These drums are a way of connecting to the past, in a sense. I can imagine somebody playing these drums at some hop or a club back in the 50's or early 60's and I kind of connect to that time period. I don't have the same mystique associated with the 80's and so my level of interest is not tuned in as much to those drums from that era.

Even if the drums are well made and sound great it doesn't have the history connection that is a part of the attraction of vintage drums.

But that is just me, I am sure that there are many who will look on the 80's and the wood dyna sonics and have that connection, but that will probably be in a few more years.

That is why I think those XP dyna sonics don't get the attention right now, more the history not the drum.

The XP10s are rarer. The ovals have greater appeal.

And they are really good snare drums.

Recent Guitar Center Sighting....... OCDP 7ish deep snare, humongous 3"+ holes, and fiberskyn head, cause the guy in the store thought it looked "cool".

I agree with Mike that it's the history more than the drum. I've never heard an XP Dyna or Super Ten. You guys that have them tell me how they compare to earlier wood Dynas.

I've been thinking about Bruces idea and getting a junk COB Dyna and putting the hardware on a Keller shell and wrap it in red sparkle.

This Orange Wildwood Dyna popped up this year on a Buy It Now from a guitar collector that was selling off his collection of Wildwood Fender Guitars. Listed under Guitars not drums. It is close to the serial number of the 6.5 that is in good Rogers hands with another Rogers collector/player. Peace, Gary

Gary, as usual your side glance is just priceless. A Wildwood Dyna that some guitarists is throwing out with the garbage. Precious!

Ploughman, Longroll, Mike and Jack:

Remember, I too am a child of the '60s and I treasure my Headliner from 1968. It is my first true drumset after owning somewhat of a toy prior to that.

All of the playing I'm doing now is mostly on that kit making music from the 60s and prior--Django Reinhardt, light jazz and bluegrass. Acoustic music--what the drums were made for.

I like the script badge and feel of old timeyness.

But I truly like the sound of my Londoner XP8s better. And the quality is even more special than gray painted interiors. The Memriloc hardware can't be beat. The effort that went into these drums is unsung.

And you're right. It was the decline of the company, but they went out with a bang and cut no corners in the face of overseas competition.
