Re: Show Us Your Sets!
MLVBS - I tried everything you said and the snare I'm working on (1964 ludwig) still looks like it has little bumps all over it, I guess its pitted, I understand ludwigs with alloy shells had that problem.......I'm stumped....thanks for your help though, the rest of the chrome is coming out GREAT.

Re: Show Us Your Sets!
backintoit - you're exactly right, it's the Ludwig alloy, also called Ludalloy. Chrome and aluminum were just never meant to be together...once an alloy shell is pitted there is nothing that can be done (other than re-chrome) except to shine the chrome that is left. It eventually all flakes off.
Ludwig apparently outsourced their chrome plating to 3 different companies in the 60's. One of them really knew what they were doing, which is why you can still find alloy supras that have virtually no pitting. The other two weren't as good, explaining the hundreds of supras with terrible pitting and flaking. The best way to prevent more pitting is to keep it free of finger prints and moisture.
COB dynas and COB supras from the late 50's, early 60's are a totally different story...what looks like pitting on these often ends up just being surface oxidation and dirt...they really clean up much better and can be made to look new.

Re: Show Us Your Sets!
Yeah, my 1970 COB Powertone is beautiful, this snare is a mess, it's a shame too because the rest of the set is coming out beautiful, gives me a new respect for Ludwig, they seem to be very well made indeed......Thanks for your help once again.........
