Re: Show Us Your Sets!
Ill take door #1 is real. The logo seems a bit more centered and the 2nd ones finish looks a lil busyer and not as chunky as the one to the left.

Re: Show Us Your Sets!
They are simply beautiful.............and you've done such a good job on the FT that I certainly can't tell the difference..........is that a 24 or a 26 Bass? Someday, I'm gonna have a WMP kit, I think that is the classiest finish, it has that Gene Krupa/Buddy Rich class about it. MLVBS that is just beautiful, congratulations............WOW

Re: Show Us Your Sets!
Thanks!
The fake one is on the left!
The way you can tell is the lug inserts - they are the later 70's Big R kind with the little washer on the outside rather than a spring on the inside. I know, very hard to see.
Rogersoholic - you are correct that the logo is off center on the "real" tom on the right. I was trying to be really precise on the fake one and match it to the real one, but it just felt wrong putting the badge that off center. I looked on ebay and there's quite a bit of variation...I have a feeling they just eyeballed it. So I centered it on the fake one.

Backinoit3 - it had some minor pitting and rust on the lugs and rims, and those white spots of oxidation that eventually become pits were on the whole drum.
To clean it, I first took apart the entire drum and soaked everything but the shell in extremely hot water and lots of Palmolive for 24 hours. I cleaned the shell with Eagle one Never Dull wadding polish and a very soft new cotton cloth. I used a toothbrush for the ridges in the middle of the shell, and for the white junk that accumulates in the Rogers script logo. With the shell you have to do little bits at a time, constantly watch, and never get too vigorous or you will start creating swirls of microscopic scratches, giving it a hazy look.
For the rims and lugs, I just rubbed a lot with cotton once they had been thoroughly soaked. For spots of rust or tough pitting, I use 0000 steel wool (gasp!) with soap. I know that most everyone swears off of steel wool when it comes to vintage chrome, but I think it can be a great tool when used properly. It must be a new piece...once it's used, even a little, it will start to scratch. It also must be lubricated - I use soapy water and just dip the steel wool in first. Never, ever use dry steel wool...that will also scratch.
Lastly, I only use it where there is obvious rust and pitting that nothing else will help, rust removers would make worse, and regular methods would take many, many hours. A new, lubricated piece of 0000 steel wool will remove rust in seconds.
Again, you must be careful, watch constantly, don't rub too vigorously, and replace the steel wool often, or you will create haziness and swirls. I never use it on the actual shell, or to merely polish a spot that was otherwise fine. Just on the rough stuff.
