Rogers 20 year mystery...got a clue???
I was emailed the following pics by a long time collector/player that has had this odd Rogers-like kit for the past 20 yrs. Not sure what it is.
He told me that the drums have been recovered. Factory flat grey interiors with three pin holes for a script logo(not sure which one). Also the interior paper tags have been removed. Ghost rectangle shadow remains. No extra holes on any of the drums. Lug holes haven't been modified or enlarged. Some drum rims have been changed but some are Rogers. All the lugs are complete on all 4 drums and match each other. Was this Rogers factory built or hobbiest with a complete set of lugs?!
I see nothing swivomatic as far as hardware. Tom has clip mount, bass has a rail mount for the tom, cymbal bass mounts look walberg +auge(generic), bass spurs are just a post(w+a)? and floor tom leg brackets look to be Rogers stay tight. Snare has an orchestra throw off.
The lugs look like a lot like the artists drawing on the Champion floor tom page I posted in the (and in 1957...) section. I've never seen a complete set of Champion drums and have not had any response for a catalog page with a complete set. Those lug pics look like a Rogers casting. Forum member Powertone agrees.
My guess is that it is either a Rogers b+b kit that had a lug swapperuni or a complete Champion kit. No indication of three pin holes around the grommet that was from a Champion badge. Not repainted grey. I'd need to see a clear catalog page or other drum with Champion badge before I'd say for sure those lugs are Champion. Would like to to end the mystery for this guy because 20yrs of not knowing is a long time. Any help please post away. Thanks in advance! Peace, Gary

Re: Rogers 20 year mystery...got a clue???
Dan, Thanks for the thoughts. I can't explain the shell indent near the 3 nail holes. I first thought someone grinded off the interior nail tips then filled/sanded and re painted. The seller reassured me that the interior paint is original. Here are some pics:
Tough to tell from the artists drawing. Both floor toms look like they have similar but different lugs.
Further, if you look at the picture of the floor tom with the set you can see a slight variation in the flat part on the top(non insert side) of the lug. One is flat and the other has a slope. Now I'm more confused. If there wasn't anything Swivo on those shells I thought earlier Rogers rather than later 60s Duplex. Not familiar with those either. Did they use Swivo parts? Still would like to see more in print or other drums with those Champion lugs. Peace, Gary

Re: Rogers 20 year mystery...got a clue???
Thanks for the reminder Roger/Isaac and help Powertone and Dan. Good to be able to put it up on a forum where there is an understanding of what it is and how cool it is.
above found more Champion to compare with the pages found. I have seen the Champion badge on snares and bass drums. Please let me know if you have seen toms with badges too. Above examples didn't have one. Held on by 3 pins and the grommet. back to the thread so....NOT Champion. But still would like to find a page advertising a complete 4pc outfit.
Mr. Cook saw it and said prototype. That's is where it stands now. Please chime in if one pops up in a town near you. Just might be a one off Rogers thought. Peace, Gary

Re: Rogers 20 year mystery...got a clue???
I too have a floor tom that looks just like a Rogers, grey inside paint, tall hoops, early floor tom leg holders. No badge or paper label. It has the same smooth lugs as in Gary's picture. I took it to the Chicago Drum Show a few years ago to see if anybody could help identify it. Several people said they thought it was a Grossman drum after they sold Rogers and they said they thought it was built in the old Rogers factory. Some said it was made up from old parts that were still around and some said it looked too old to be from the CBS/Rogers era. I wish we had a definitive answer.
