Weather in Ausatralia

Val just to let you know I've been thinking of you.
Everyone seemed to think the weather at the AO was the hottest it would get, but it appears you have record temperatures at the moment. Hope you've got efficient A/C, but should thing getting to & from your car & until the cool air kicks in must be extremely unpleasant.
The news is full of the bush fires & how bad they are + the death toll rising all the time. I just hope everyone else has taken heed & got away before there is any more tragedies

I'm ok Diana but it was a scary weekend.

I've had some sad news today from a neighbour and I am bracing myself for more bad news in the next few days.

10 fires are still out of control and I'm scared for some people I know from work and for family but I am hoping that I am just over reacting! It didn't help seeing one of the huge water fighting cranes fly over my house only 10 minutes ago.

Here are the places to read about how horrific this is and it's not over. It will be days before we know the worse and weeks before the fires are under control.

It has hardly rained for months and we have been in a drought for years now. We desperately need rain over the next few weeks.

Watching the news just shows how devastating it all is. And we can see how much worse it is than what we've seen in previous years.
Val, look after yourself. We're all thinking of you

Re: Weather in Ausatralia

Thanks for the concern. So far all are safe but not completely in the clear with the situation changing every few hours with the direction of the fires.

The weather calmed for a couple of days but there are still 24 fires out of control with a couple of very large ones to be worried about. The winds have picked up again this afternoon which now pose more danger for people. The heat will be back this weekend as well so there are still dangerous times ahead.

I can't begin to tell you of the heartbreak and the suffering of the people effected. They fear that the number of deaths will still grow from 173 to over 300. It will be weeks before they discover all remains and are now saying that they will never be able to identify some.

I fear that there will be more to come in the next few weeks due to how dry everything is and no rain in site still and to know that some of the fires that caused deaths were deliberatly lit. Now that is plain murder and I hope they catch this person(s).

My heart is also heavy for all the suffering pets and wildlife.

I can't help feeling like I want to drop everything and help in some way. The only way I know to help is to donate money to the red cross and the animal rescue centers.

Val

Yes, the wildlife has been mentioned and also pets. One guy said he managed to save his dog, but others have to deal with family members & just aren't able to deal with the pets. Hopefullly they are let losse & many are able to get away, animals do have extra sensitive instincts which help, (apparently they didn't find any dead wild animals after the tsunami 3 years ago) but of course with the fires moving so fast, many would not be able to outrun them.
I've just been watching the latest news about them and really hope the police are successful in finding at least some of the arsonists. Hopefully they will get a long jail sentence which just may deter anone from doing the same thing in the future.

Over 1 Million animals have died according to this evenings reports. Survivors have said that the screaming of animals as fires raced through was so loud amd soul piercing.

Nothing out ran the speed of the fire, not even cars.

It was only luck if the firestorm took a detour and missed a patch and we are talking about a number of different parts of Victoria and more than 30 bushfires with many of these becoming firestorms.

How sad.
I know some of these fires are due to natural causes, but when it comes to the arsonists, I'd have great fun thinking up some fire torture for them if I were able to mete out their punishment.
With luck they weren't able to outrun the fires either.
I've been in touch with Anne & she says it's hot in Perth as well and they have bush almost right up to the house and only 1 road in & out. She says she worries when the wind comes up, but so far no fires there.
She sent me a link to The Age web page & I've been checking it out. There was a bit of relief in that many of the people photographed who got out, were holding on to their dogs, so they managed to get them away with them.

Re: Weather in Ausatralia

My brother made it home safely last Tuesday so that was a relief for me because I always worry about my baby brother emoticon All good news with the work mates as well with a couple of them protecting their properties successfully and they came through it fine.

I saw my cousin yesterday and all postive news there too but his boss lost everything which is of course very tough for them but with almost all of North/East country Victoria under fire threat the past week and the amount of lives lost (181 and 120 missing) to loose your home (1800+ homes lost and 7000 people without homes) and business is not all bad news when you see the lives lost and the families effected by the loss. I just hope that all of the towns that have been wiped out can rebuild.

There are still 12 fires out of control and I've been coughing and gagging at times with the amount of smoke where I live but they say this is due to back burning as they try to create containment perimeters while the weather and wind is friendly. I know that where I live is no where near as bad as the communities closer to the fires. The sun and the sky in the mornings are glowing bright read due to all the smoke.

It will be weeks before the files are under complete control so I hope that during this time the weather stays mild and wouldn't it be a boost to all if we could get some rain!

I can't express enough what a wonderful and courageous job the CFA volunteers are doing. Their lives at risk daily and they don't even get paid for this! It's only the metropolitan firefighters that are professionaly paid for this and they are not trained for the country so can not assist different duties. Relief has flown in from interstate, New Zealand , US and Canada. The overseas volunteers will off expertise in recovery and identfying victims that have been, well, I suppose cremated in the fire would best describe the situation.

83million raised so far in donations and 2billion in damage. It's along hard road back for the survivors. I just wish I was in a position to do so much more than just donate money as I am now donating my money to 3 animal shelters that are helping with the recovery of displaced pets and injured animals/wildlife from the bushfires.
