Verdasco Vs. Philippoussis (Biggest Under-achiever)

This is a bizarre comparison too make, however watching these 2 guys play makes me think constantly as too why/how they havn't claimed the title as the King of Tennis.

Mark's lack of success is mostly due too his injury prone body. Along with perhaps some questionable discipline (No offense intended).

Fernando Verdasco on the other hand doesn't realy have these common problems, sure most players get niggles from time to time and Fernando has probably gone through some sort of serious injuries throughout his ATP career, however given the amount of tournaments he played in 2007, along with seeing his performances it only makes me wonder as too how he has only recently gotten back into the top 30.

In my oppinion Fernando Verdasco is as good of a ball striker as Roger Federer, those who have seen him play may agree with me. His backhand and serve are solid, his footwork and court movement is good and his forehand is in my oppinion the best shot in the game today. Watching him hit his forehands makes me laugh, due to the stupendous pace and angles he creates with it.
His forehand has the Guile and Variation of Roger Federers, along with the Pace of Fernando Gonzales'.

Watching him play against Nadal and Djokovic in the past 12 months made me understand as too why maybe he hasn't lived up too his potential, in his matches against the World #'s 2 & 3 he played a lot of low percentage tennis however he made it look both natural and easy. Nadal and Djokovic's flare and firepower didn't seem too match-up against the Verdasco artillery, Verdasco blasted winner after winner. He looks like the perfect player. Yet even though he seems too have the makings of a Future champion, a recurring trend showed up in his game. That trend involved his ability too squander several 0-30 and break point chances. Along with getting tight on Big Points. I completely understand that it would be quite tough too execute chances against guys like Nadal and Djokovic, seeing as they make you earn pretty much everything out there, also having such a low percentage style of game is always going too be hard too properly execute when you're a touch nervous or tight. He seems too get just as nervoud when he comes out too serve at 4-4 or 4-5 in a set. That may be because he thinks that has too hold serve too stay in the set. Watching him play reminds me of the feeling when you watch a sad movie more then once, you know what the outcome is however seeing the bulk of the show you think "how can it end up that way". In my oppinion his problem could probably be labelled as "a poor match-player".

All this being said though, I do believe that over the next few seasons he'll develop his mental strengths on the court. Which I think will lead too a top 10 ranking.

This is only my oppinion, so I understand if you don't agree with me.

I just thought that seeing as Mark is out of action it would be nice too continue with some chats about tennis. I'm surprised as too how dedicated the Scudders were during 2007, seeing as Mark was off court for pretty much the whole year. It just shows how much we support the man.
