That's very sad news. He is only 25.

I had just seen it. What a pity, he was quite a talent, but because of injury has hardly played over the last couple of years. I know he played something towards the end of last year, but had to retire injured yet again.
Sad for him, but a sensible decision to not push his body and try to continue & ignore the fact that it could affect his health in later life emoticon

Ok, SERIOUSLY sick of my favourites retiring ridiculously young due to injury emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I've been following pim pim since he was about 17, the first year i went to qualifying i went to all 3 of his matches and cheered for him - he made it into the draw for the first time that year. SO unfair emoticon

jonas bjorkman and thomas johansson are both retiring this year too emoticon

and we all know whats happening with Mark....

Magnus is long gone, so is Enqvist....

Thats pretty much it for tennis for me emoticon unless i can find some new players who interest me (which i didnt find any at the Aus Open this year emoticon)

This is sad news, its always sad too see players been forced to retire at an early age, especially when they didn't achieve their dreams, or at least live up too their full potential, this guy realy did have a spectacular serve and forehand combination. I recall watching him belt plenty of beautiful inside out forehands, they were quite a sight.

I'm personally a fan of Swedish tennis, I've liked, respected and admired the bulk of Sweden's Tour Players, it'll be sad when Jonas and Thomas call it quits, they are almost the last remaining old-school players. I felt so sorry for Thomas when he got struck in the eye by a ball from Mario Ancic in early 2006, he'd been in brilliant form in the prior 12 months or so, he was seeming too get better and better. Then something so freaky happened too him and that was pretty much the end of his run-of-form. And Jonas realy is a pleasure too watch, his intensity and finesse is always a pleasure too see. It's amazing how he still plays singles and doubles regularly, it shows how talented he realy is.

Yes the end of this year will be a sad one for both Sweedish fans and traditional tennis fans. But hopefully some more Borg-Bjorkman-Johansson's will come through.

This realy does help me appreciate the efforts that Mark has made too keep attempting comebacks.

This is sad. Somehow I thought he was younger but that's probably because he hasn't been around to much the past 2 years.

Guga is retiring this year too emoticon He hasn't been able to play much the past 3 years and is hoping to get a WC into the French Open.

Christina, like you, my passion has gone for tennis at the moment. Mark was the player I was passionate about but I loved players like Guga, Sampras and Ivanisavic. Safin was one of my big faves too as I saw him as a mix of Goran and Pete. I can't really get too excited with the game after them.

My tennis passion has just re-ignited - Thomas Johansson has changed his mind about retiring since winning an olympic silver medal, and now Pim Pim has decided he wants to come back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joachim JohanssonFormer ATP World No. 9 Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson of Sweden announced on Friday that he would resume his professional tennis career starting at the If Stockholm Open, where he has received a wild card for the main draw, which starts on Monday.

The 26-year-old Johansson originally retired from the ATP circuit in February after suffering from shoulder injuries for three years.

“My shoulder feels much better and when Pelle (Per Hjertquist, Tournament Director) asked me to play here it felt like a very exciting challenge. It’s extra special for me to play this tournament, with home court advantage and with the wonderful atmosphere in the arena”, Johansson said.

The If Stockholm Open will be Johansson’s only event in 2008, while he will resume a full schedule starting in 2009.

The 6’6’’ right-hander played his last professional match in Stockholm last year, defeating Carlos Berlocq in the first round before withdrawing from his second match due to illness.

Johansson captured three ATP titles at 2004 Memphis (d. Kiefer) and 2005 Adelaide (d. Dent) and Marseille (d. Ljubicic). His best Grand Slam performance came at the ’04 US Open, when he beat defending champion Andy Rod**** in the quarterfinals before falling to Lleyton Hewitt in the semifinals. He reached a career-high No. 9 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings on February 14, 2005.
