Re: Mark to play dBI Tennis Challenger - New York (Aug 7 - 13)

thanks for the cute report diane!! hahaha you gotta love mums! I hope the pic turns out ok. I'm glad mark made a joke out of the warning... he must of been a little frustrated with himself to cause a little fuss with the umpire over a warning.

But diane SERIOUSLY... if mark was practicing at my mums work i would be there in an instant. omg, once in a life time chance to catch mark - stuff work!!!! hahaha.

hope mark plays a little better next round, straight sets would be good.

look forward to hearing more reports! emoticon

ok diane, i understand... can your mum sit up and close to mark during the match? do you think she could take a couple of action shots? ... i know what you mean about not being camera savy, my mum is the same with anything electrical, but its a chance worth taking.

I still can't believe she showed him a photo of you - such a classic mother thing to do! emoticon

Can two bucks get any better than this?
Hard to imagine there being a better ticket in town last night. The packed house saw some great tennis.

Philippoussis def Lee 7-6(2),3-6,6-3

Really great day of tennis today. In the ranks of the best days in the history here in Broome. Really enjoyable to see Rec Park jammed and full of excitement. Philippoussis did not disappoint tonight. It is reminiscent of Andy Murray last year in that match against Harsh...
Mark turned it on in the 3rd set after he relaxed.
1st set really it was Lee who impressed. Lee was there to play hard and made it a good one. Lots of quick points. In the second, Mark let the concentration slip and Martin took advantage. Credit there to Lee because he took the opportunity that was given. Mark was disappointed too. It got to him and he let out a yell when he was winning 2-1 in the 3rd, 30-40 Lee serving. The chair gave him a warning for foul language. Mark flipped and immediately called for the supervisor. Poussis apparently needed that moment to focus. He ended up breaking Lee in that game. The level of play had risen. "Scared to hit the ball" Mark said as he was continually searching to step it up. A couple of games later, Mark didn't get to a short ball quick enough and the chair correctly said he hadn't. Mark mentioned a couple of words to the chair, and gave the crowd a big laugh when he smiled looking for a break. He continued to settle down and interact with the crowd a bit and the game responded. He stepped it up, chipping and charging more and showing the crowd some crisp volleys. The decider was a big baseline forehand that Lee couldn't get to.

Organizers brought in extra bleachers for that feature match, and it was needed. The house was jammed and it was entertaining. Just cool to see people appreciating Mark with a nice warm hand, and then Mark signing autographs after the match. Great atmosphere.

Tues Report:

I sent my mother!!!! to stalk for me. and yes she managed to embarass me !
He won in 3 sets.
Alexis was there.

Mark missed a shot and said "god damnit" and the Ump said he was giving him a warning. So Mark argued w/Ump, calling for a referee cuz he's never ever EVER been fined/warned about saying god damnit. So finally they let it go. Next time he missed a shot just said 'HA HA' and everyone laughed.

So after my mom (ack!!!! ) showed him a picture of me saying i'd met him before and could she take another pic of him and he squatted down way low to take it w/my 5yr old niece.
She said that was nice, he didn't say much. And i'm worried cuz she's just not camera savvy!

ANd they've been practicing up at my old high school, where my mom works - i was trying to get her to ditch work and go stalking. sighhhh why do i have to work??!!!!

that 's all for now........

Wow diane, what a great job your mum did! Thanks to you and your mum for this report emoticon

It's so much better to read your mum's report than the match report article as they didnt seem to have a clue what was said and why Mark reacted. hmmm, must be a bible-belt area *shrug*

It sounds like fun though and it's nice to see Mark relaxed in that last set. Hopfully Mark will be more relaxed for the next match and not let his concentration slip.

Press & Sun-Bulletin
BINGHAMTON -- They came to see the big serve and the powerful ground strokes that made Mark Philippoussis one of the world's best tennis players.

But the estimated 500 fans who came to Tuesday night's action at the dBI Tennis Challenger at Rec Park were also treated to an entertaining, back-and-forth match.

Philippoussis, a two-time Grand Slam finalist and former top-10 player who's working his way back from injuries, had just enough shots to outlast Martin Lee of Great Britain, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3 in a first-round match of the $50,000 Challenger.

"The first match is always the toughest," said Philippoussis, the top seed who will face Noam Okun of Israel in Thursday's second round. "You're in a new place, a new atmosphere, new courts. But once you get used to it, you can get on a roll. I'm happy with the win."

Philippoussis has won 11 titles on the ATP Tour, including the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I., last month. In his prime he was ranked as high as No. 8 in the world and reached the finals of the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. He's by far the most decorated player to take part in the dBI Tennis Challenger's 13-year history.

But a series of knee injuries derailed his career. Last week back spasms forced the 29-year-old to withdraw from the Vancouver Open.

Philippoussis said he's healthy and felt 100 percent for Tuesday's match.

"I need to play a lot of matches," Philippoussis said. "It's a long way back up the mountain. I'm prepared to do it."

Philippoussis' main weapon -- his blink-and-you'll-miss-it cannon of a serve, the tennis equivalent of a Roger Clemens fastball --was on full display Tuesday. It's a serve that seems to gain speed after it bounces, and he can move it around the service box at will.

He had 22 aces and, in the first set, lost just six points off his serve. On one service winner, the ball rolled off Lee's racket and went over the backstop behind him.

"With a serve that big, pretty much all you can do is guess one way or the other," Lee said. "It's one of the biggest serves in the world."

Lee, a 28-year-old from London who won the Wimbledon Juniors Doubles title in 1995, held his own serve throughout the first set to force the tiebreaker, which Philippoussis won.

After that, the left-handed Lee picked up his game. He broke Philippoussis twice in the second set to even the match.

"When you're playing against a big serve like that, all you can do is concentrate on your own serve," Lee said. "I thought I played pretty well."

While spectators may have been surprised when Lee took the second set, Philippoussis wasn't shocked.

"He's a talented guy," Philippoussis said. "Lefties are a little difficult to play against, and he hit the ball great. But after I won the first set, I relaxed a little out there. I dropped down a couple gears instead of staying on him or turning it up a few gears. If you give them an inch, they take a lot."

But in the third set, Philippoussis recovered. He broke Lee twice in the third set, taking a 4-2 lead when Lee double-faulted on break point. Philippoussis closed out the match with a huge forehand winner down the line.

"I've just got to play relaxed and keep the pressure on them the whole match." Philippoussis said.

Philippoussis received an obscenity warning in the third set after yelling a mild profanity. Upset at the call, he summoned a tournament referee to complain, but there were no further incidents.

Note the difference in reporting techniques between the story above and the Australian media.

Small article in todays Age about Mark, Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur getting through today with some wins, they it goes on to say

"The 124th-ranked Philippoussis received a warning for using foul language as Lee mounted a comeback in the second set."

as opposed to the one above 'mild profanity'

They have to sensationalise everything in the Australian media emoticon
