Wildcards for Scud, Molik
Sportal

Enigmatic Australian Mark Philippoussis will receive a wildcard into the main draw of the US Open after Tennis Australia put his name up to the US Tennis Association as its nomination for the country's men's recipient.

Philippoussis has been on the improve in recent times, the two-time grand slam finalist rising to 112 in the world rankings - which is just outside the cut-off for main draw direct entry - on the strength of an ATP win at Newport in July and a round of four effort at a Binghamton challenger event last week.

The Victorian earned his first grand slam final at the US Open in 1998, where he was defeated by countryman and defending champion Patrick Rafter, but his best result since has been reaching the third round in 2004.

Meanwhile, former world No.8 Alicia Molik and Americans Serena Williams and Chanda Rubin have been granted wildcards into the main draw of the US Open.

Molik, on the comeback trail from an inner-ear infection, turned in her best performance this year at the French Open, making the third round, before bowing out in the second round at Wimbledon.

While she made a first-round exit from this week's tournament in Montreal, Molik's ranking has risen from 508 in May to the current mark of 202.

Molik achieved her best results at Flushing Meadows in 2001 and 2003 when she made the third round.

The 79th-ranked Williams, who missed six months this year due to a knee injury, had a ranking of 139 - 37 places below the required ranking to gain direct entry into the main draw - at the entry deadline for the US Open.

Australians are granted one wildcard in each of the men's and women's singles draw under a reciprocal Grand Slam exchange between the United States Tennis Association and Tennis Australia.

After seeing the articles pop up on other news sites, I hope we aren't counting our chickens to early!!!

it's only a recommendation from Tennis Australia and not an official announcement from USTA :-(

News outlets are making out its a done-deal but.........

Don't worry val, mark has got it.

I agree, Val, we should be cautious but I hope we will all have something to celebrate soon, and that Mark's health will enable him to take full advantage.

Thanks for the news!

On edit: I just checked the US Open site and Mark's bios is among those listed among Player Bios. It would be nice if they would say straight out that he has been given a wildcard!

Re: WILDCARD FOR MARK TO THE US OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!

well the story as gone global, so i think it's safe to say Mark has got it.

Philippoussis Gets U.S. Open Wild Card

The Associated Press
WASHINGTON

Former finalist Mark Philippoussis and seven young American men received wild cards for the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Philippoussis, a former top-10 player now ranked 112th, has entered only nine tour-level events in 2006 because of injuries. The 1998 U.S. Open and 2003 Wimbledon runner-up was given a wild card by the U.S. Tennis Association as part of a reciprocal agreement with Tennis Australia. The USTA will get to pick a man who will get a wild card at the 2007 Australian Open.

The other U.S. Open wild cards all went to U.S. players who are 20 or younger: Scoville Jenkins, Alex Kuznetsov, Wayne Odesnik, Sam Querrey, Phillip Simmonds, Ryan Sweeting and Donald Young.

The 17-year-old Young earned his invitation by winning a second consecutive USTA 18-and-under national championship last weekend. Jenkins won that title in 2004.

The U.S. Open begins Aug. 28.

Re: WILDCARD FOR MARK TO THE US OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!

This was on the ATP site:

The USTA today announced that a talented group of young Americans consisting of Scoville Jenkins (Atlanta), Alex Kuznetsov (Richboro, Pa.), Wayne Odesnik (Weston, Fla.), Sam Querrey (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Phillip Simmonds (Reston, Va.), Ryan Sweeting (Fort Lauderdale) and Donald Young (Atlanta), as well as Mark Philippoussis of Australia, have been awarded men's singles main draw wild card entries into the 2006 US Open, to be played Aug. 28-Sep. 10

So YAY! emoticon
