posticon Mark of dedication / Scud fired up / Hewitt and Philippoussis to lead Aussies against Argentina

MARK Philippoussis has dived into training in Florida for his Davis Cup return in Argentina this month with a commitment his friend and conditioner Brett Stephens cannot remember seeing.

Philippoussis, beaten in the first round of the US Open by world No. 2 Rafael Nadal on August 30, has been practising and doing fitness training for the past four days, Stephens said in New York yesterday.

In a promising sign, Philippoussis, ranked No. 113, is planning to play a number of US Challenger tournaments after the Davis Cup semi-final from September 22-24 and has engaged Stephens, who was in charge of Pete Sampras's fitness late in the great American's career, through the Australian summer.

"Mark is positive and he's looking forward to the Davis Cup and then playing a whole bunch of Challengers after it to get his ranking in the top 70 hopefully by the end of the year," Stephens said.

"The Davis Cup is a big part of his program and he's hoping he will get picked and play well."

Tennis Australia plans to name a four-man team on Tuesday .

Former Australian team coach Wally Masur said it would be a difficult decision between three singles options or plumping for doubles specialist Paul Hanley alongside Wayne Arthurs and two singles players.

hmmm it will be interesting to see how this unfolds... im think hewitt, mark, luczak, and hanley should be the team. I think mark might have to have a play-off with luczak for singles. Luczak is a clayclourt player. I think mark might be the ideal sub for wayne arthurs in the doubles, if he not picked for singles.

i just want mark in the team regardless... so far all reports are pretty positive.

Tonights reports are saying that Hewitt will play but may delay his arrival to Argentina until mid next week.

Mark looks to be on the team as the other singles player emoticon emoticon

The rest of the team most likely Wayne Arthurs and Paul Hanley. They will probably head off to Argentina by the end of the week.

We'll hear the official team announcement tomorrow.

Marce, its time to educate us abit on Buenos Aires. How about some links and pics for us to check out? emoticon

I'll have to check the stadium out with Google Earth too!

Val
